Mia, Grace and Amelia among WORST baby names, according to Mumsnet users

WHEN it comes to choosing a baby name, you're never going to please everybody.

Now a  post has revealed the monikers parents say they'd never pick for their children - and they include some of the most popular picks of 2018.

The post - entitled "What you would never name a child and why?" - was posted earlier this week, and has since racked up hundreds of responses.

It's clear that people have some very strong opinions on the subject.

One said they didn't like Mia because it reminds them of the acronym for "Missing In Action", while another pointed out that Lana is "anal" backwards.

Then there's Portia - which derives from the Latin word for "pig" - and Jackson, as it can also be a surname.

Others have been put off names by people they've met and didn't get on with.

One wrote: "Hannah and Sophie. Nothing wrong with those names but I’ve just met some massive t**** called Hannah and Sophie in the past!"

Another said: "Every Gemma/Jemma I've ever known have not been nice people. Ditto Oliver. Those names have very negative connotations for me."

Here are a few more names people have shunned, for both hilarious and bizarre reasons...

  • Olivia: "Beautiful but overused"
  • Clementine: "Often shorten to 'Clem'. In my brain, 'Clem' = 'Phlegm'"
  • Simon: "Simple Simon"
  • Oliver: "It makes me think of Oliver Cromwell and that makes me think of Puritans and banning Christmas"
  • Astrid: "Because I suggested it to [husband] and he replied 'Ass Turd'?"
  • Flora: "Makes me think of bacteria."
  • Graham: "It sounds like 'Grey Ham'"
  • Grace: "There are very few accents that say it gracefully"
  • Amelia: "I find the 'me' so whiny"
  • Mercedes: "She's a child not a car"
  • Maggie: "It sounds like maggot. Margaret is little better"
  • Chloe: "Sounds too much like the German popular slang for toilet"
  • Damien: "The name of the Antichrist in The Omen."

Worried that you'll never be able to find a name that's impossible to criticise?

In the end, Mumsnet users agreed that almost every moniker out there seemed to have made the no-go list for at least one person.

So if you love Flora or Damien, go for it. Just try not to think of bacteria.
