TONIGHT'S the night - the Golden Globes Awards 2019 has kicked off in style, with the likes of Lady Gaga and Amy Adams gracing the red carpet in gorgeous designs by Valentino and Calvin Klein.

But not everyone has hit the style mark this evening, with some stars opting for some very weird and wonderful designs.

Model Heidi Klum arrived at the awards in an outlandish black tulle gown, embellished with 3D flowers.

The peculiar style by Monique Lhuillier featured a plunge bodice and belted bow.

Wearing a similar style was Idris Elba's fiancee, Sabrina Dhowre, 29.

The loved-up pair looked adorable arriving with Idris' daughter, Isan Elba, but we weren't too keen on Sabrina's orange and black belted gown, complete with 3D floral embellishment.

Joanna Newsome also opted for a very quirky design.

The 36-year-old musician - who is also married to host Andy Samberg - wore a nude and white mid-length gown by Rodarte, complete with laced hem and an oversized sequin love heart.

Also opting for an outlandish nude design was 50-year-old Lucy Liu, who wore an unusual sequin embroidered gown complete with tulle cape.

The one-shoulder, ethereal style by Gahlia Lahav featured splashes of neon yellow, orange and green complete with a rose gold belt.

Kate Mara wore a similar colour palette in a jewelled, floor-length nude gown.

But unfortunately, one fan on Twitter called for her stylist to "be fired".

The unflattering Miu Miu dress featured a net and lace inset and caged straps and the 35-year-old House of Cards star also opted for a rather bizarre slicked-back ponytail wrapped in gold twine.

Actress Judy Greer opted for a very formal look, arriving on the red carpet in a box-fit velvet tuxedo by Alberta Ferretti.

The 43-year-old wore an oversized double-breasted blazer and wide-leg trousers, teamed with a scrunchie and bow tie.

Also wearing a monochrome ensemble was Sofia Carson who chose a bizarre, floor-length gown teamed with a bold red lip.

The fitted design by Giambattista Valli featured an embroidered sheer overlay complete with frilled tulle around the decolletage and a satin bow around the waist.

The Good Place star D'Arcy Carden wore an ill-fitting orange gown complete with blue halter straps.

The satin, floor-length style featured a clinched-in waist and A-line skirt.

Several famous faces - including D'Arcy and co-star Jameela Jamil - have chosen to carry black and white "Time's Up" ribbons, designed by Arianne Phillips.

The ribbons symbolise commitment to creating and ensuring a safe and fair workplace for all women around the globe.

Penelope Cruz, 44 also chose a halterneck style and graced the red carpet in an iridescent black and purple gown.

The design - by Ralph & Russo - featured thick, black halter straps and an oddly-structured skirt.

Another star who wore a rather bizarre look was Janelle Monae, who arrived at the awards in a gold, black and white ensemble from Chanel's Egyptian collection.

The quirky style featured a black and gold knitted tunic, complete with gold belt, white under skirt and an extravagant metallic, armour-esque neckline.

Anne Hathaway also missed the style mark, wearing an off-the-shoulder animal print gown complete with thigh slit.

The Elie Saab design featured a metallic, animal print bodice and the actress teamed the ensemble with diamond earrings and strappy sandals.

52-year-old Halle Berry flashed her toned pins on the red carpet this evening, but we weren't keen on her burgundy-coloured gown with see-through detail.

The asymmetric style featured sheer, panelled lace, a plunge neckline and satin belt.

Meanwhile, Bridesmaids actress Maya Rudolph chose a loose-fitted black gown with OTT ruffle detail.

The Golden Globes is the first big awards ceremony in the Hollywood calendar.

It takes places five days before Oscar nomination voting closes and has had a big influence on the outcome of the Academy Awards in previous years.

This year, the ceremony is being hosted by Killing Eve's Sandra Oh, 47, and Brooklyn 99 star Andy Samberg, 40.

Both hosts have won a Golden Globe before - Sandra for her Supporting Actress role in Grey's Anatomy in 2006, as well as a Best Actress nomination for Killing Eve in this year's awards, and Andy for Best Actor and Producer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine in 2014.

British nominees include Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins returns, Claire Foy for First Man, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz for The Favourite and Rachel Madden for Bodyguard.

Why did everyone wear black at last year's event?

  • The 2018 Golden Globes saw all the event's nominees wear black, in a silent protest to tie in with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.
  • Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta Jones and Lily James were among the Hollywood stars to don the sombre hue in reaction to allegations made against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and others.
  • Time’s Up, an initiative created by 300 female Hollywood actors, executives, writers and directors to “counter systemic sexual harassment in the entertainment business”, created pins which many of the Golden Globes attendees proudly wore.
  • The “Me Too” hashtag, which started trending worldwide following a call to action from actress Alyssa Milano, has been used by some of the biggest A-list stars including Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lady Gaga.
  • Earlier today, former British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman called for glamour over "#MeToo misery" on the red carpet this year, claiming the stars "dressed like the Addams Family" at last year's event.

Earlier this week, we told you about the most awkward Golden Globes moments of all time, including Lady Gaga bumping into Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Stone’s epic hug fail.

We also revealed the Golden Globes’ sexiest, most naked dresses EVER, including Jennifer Lopez’s see-through lace gown and Jennifer Aniston’s daringly low-cut black dress.

And we showed you ex-Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman calls for glamour on 2019 Golden Globes red carpet – ‘not more MeToo misery’ with everyone in black.
