Mum urges you to help and support bigger babies just like ones born premature

You can help Bliss's ongoing work by donating here

IT is often assumed that only premature babies need care in special neonatal units.

But bigger babies also suffer life- threatening complications and need urgent help, as Gemma Batchelor found out in May 2016 when giving birth.

Her son Samuel, now two, weighed 11lb 11oz and was starved of oxygen when he got stuck for nine minutes.

As a result, he arrived not breathing and without a heartbeat and had to spend three weeks at Bedford Hospital’s neonatal unit.

Gemma, 37, from Flitwick, Beds, said: “His head came out but the rest of him wouldn’t. The doctors tried everything, but nothing was working.

“I was terrified, he’d been starved of oxygen for the whole time he was stuck. He was taken away for CPR. Samuel wasn’t breathing and he had no heartbeat. It took around five minutes to get his heart going, then he was incubated to help him breathe.”

Mum-of-three Gemma and her husband Michael, 38, are now supporting The Sun’s Light Up Christmas appeal, which aims to raise money for Bliss, the UK’s leading charity for sick and premature babies.

Gemma said: “Many families need the help of neonatal units. Samuel was nearly full-term when he was born, but he was very poorly. Bliss were great. They are a huge support.”
