BUM DEAL

What your backside says about you

Pert, saggy, round, flat ...bottoms come in all shapes and sizes

PERT, saggy, wide, tiny – bottoms come in all shapes and sizes.

Most of us think we’ve got a bum deal, but having a round rump can mean a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Dress size: 10/12

Bottom type: The Bang-on Bum (guessed correctly)

Julia Niewiadomska, 33, works in accounts, lives in Ealing, west London, with her partner and has no children.

Before: “I quite like my bottom – it is very comfortable to sit on.
It’s rather round and full and has some dimples but I have learned to live with them. Plus my partner does not seem to mind.

“I used to do a lot of horse- riding and I think that has had a legacy on my bottom, making it quite big and bouncy.

“I do occasional exercise and watch what I eat, but I would not say I have the perfect figure.

“I am quietly confident I will know my own bottom as I do look at it sometimes in the mirror.”

After: “It’s great to see what your bottom really looks like, as you never get a full picture when you look in the mirror. It looks much better than I thought. I was sure it was much bigger and out of proportion.”

2. Sharon

Vital statistics: 34 29 42

Dress size: 10/12

Bottom type: The Pear Bum (guessed correctly)

Nursing assistant Sharon Dimery, 24, lives in Bristol with her husband Thomson, 29, who is a tiler. She does not have any children.

Before: “I have cellulite and stretch marks on my bottom, which make it rather distinctive so I am sure I will know mine.

“Despite the cellulite I like the shape of my bottom and I wear tight clothes to show it off.

“I get lots of compliments about my bottom. Men have said to me in the street,
‘That’s a lovely big bum!’

“I dance a lot and run a street dance group in my free time, so I am very fit and my bottom gets lots of exercise. I don’t think I could make it smaller, no matter how much I dieted.”

After: “Number two is mine – I think! I had no idea it would be so difficult to spot myself from behind. A big bottom is in my genes, so I can’t change that but I do wish I had less cellulite.”

3. Vanessa

Vital statistics: 32 27 34

Dress size: 10/12

Bottom type: The Apple Bum (guessed wrong – she picked Gemma’s)

Part-time receptionist Vanessa Powell, 43, lives in Coulsdon, Surrey. She is a married to Stacey, 36, an architect, and they have two children, Jessica, nine, and Violet, six.

Before: “Like most women, I rarely stand naked in front of the mirror and examine my bottom. In general, I think it is OK and there isn’t too much cellulite.

“Most of my weight now is on my tummy, after having the girls.

“I go to the gym and use the cross-trainer, which I think is good for bottoms.

“I’ve been on holiday already this summer to Zante and I wore a bikini and felt very confident.

“My husband certainly likes my bottom! I’m pretty confident I can spot my own bottom – it has quite a particular shape.”

After: “I didn’t recognise my bum straight away. Overall, I think it looks OK but not too happy about the chubby legs!”

4. Michelle

Vital statistics: 34 27 34

Dress size: 8/10

Bottom type: The Michael Flatley (guessed wrong – she picked Nardia’s)

Thirty-five-year-old Michelle Parry lives in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and is a single mum to George, seven. Michelle works in promotions and events.

Before: “I am proud of my bottom. I exercise a lot and do lots of workout classes.

“I think in general my bottom is in good shape and I am cautiously confident that I will be able to spot it in a line-up!

“I try to eat healthily and I think there’s room for improvement on my rear, but when I’m on the beach in a bikini I get lots of compliments.

“This summer I am going to Spain with friends and George. I will be packing bikinis rather than swimming costumes.”

After: “It was a bit of a shock to see my bottom in all its glory, but I am pleasantly surprised. But all the bottoms look great and it’s refreshing to see real bottoms not airbrushed ones.”

5. Jenny

Vital statistics: 38 34 40

Dress size: 14

Bottom type: The Saggy Sue (guessed correctly)

Jenny Lesslie, 44, from Southampton, is a single mum to sons Cailan, ten, and Aron, eight.

Before: “It’s good that I can’t see my bottom very often. I don’t even have a full-length mirror.

“My bottom is definitely a bit too big and a bit too droopy. I wouldn’t say I obsess about my bottom but I know there is a lot of room for improvement.

“I try to buy clothes which do not accentuate my bum. With the boys, I haven’t had time to go to the gym for a year and I know I should put much more effort into keeping in shape.

“I eat a healthy diet but the years have taken their toll. Our holiday is a week in Wales, so I am more likely to be wearing a cagoule than a bikini. I don’t think I’ll recognise my bottom.”

After: “The embarrassment! I definitely have to do some exercise. I had no idea I looked like this from the rear.”

6. Nardia

Vital statistics: 38 34 42

Dress size: 16

Bottom type: Saggy Sue (guessed wrong, picked her daughter’s bottom)

Housekeeping manager Nardia Corbutt, 47, lives in Bridlington in East Yorkshire with her husband Bryan, 54. She has two grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

Before: “I don’t think any woman really likes her own bottom, unless she is a supermodel. I never look at my own in the mirror but I know it is still too big and I would like to get the fat and cellulite off.

“I have already lost three and a half stone this year. When I had Gemma at 18 I was a size ten and I had a great rear.

“Now I have a long way to go to achieve the bottom of my dreams. I have a very sweet tooth and love cakes.

“My grandchildren feed me chocolate and say, ‘It doesn’t matter, you’re a granny!’ I’m fairly confident I’ll recognise it.”

After: “It’s harder than you think to pick out your own behind. I’d prefer it if it was a bit smaller.”

7. Nefe

Vital statistics: 36 33 42

Dress size: 14/16

Bottom type: The Apple Bum (guessed wrong – she picked Vanessa’s)

Nefe Oguntoye, 26, is single and works as an accountant. She lives in Kent.

“Men like rounded bottoms, I have found.

“I don’t like my thighs, which are rather plump and cushioned, but I am proud of my bottom.

“I do lots of walking to keep in shape but I never obsess about being skinny. I don’t think that is attractive.

“My bottom is so individual that I am absolutely confident I will know which one is mine.”

After: “I should have recognised the stretch marks and the flabby sides! I still love my bum, though, and am pretty confident about how I look.

“I’m never going to be super skinny but I like my curves. I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got.”

8. Gemma

Vital statistics: 38 42 48

Dress size: 16/18

Bottom type: Saggy Sue (guessed correctly)

Gemma Finney, 25, Nardia’s daughter, also lives in Bridlington, with husband Chris, 39, and her two children, Harry, four, Oscar, three, and two step-children, Nicole, 17, and Blair, 13. Gemma is training to be a midwife. Chris is disabled.

Before: “I never look at my bottom but I am pretty confident I will be able to spot it.

“I hate it. It’s far too big, and this week I am joining WeightWatchers.

“When I was younger I was lighter and I’d love to be a size ten, but since the children the weight has piled on. Biscuits and junk food are my downfall.

“This summer we’re hoping to go on holiday to Spain and I will wear a swimming costume but with a kaftan to hide my rear.”

After: “I spotted my bottom right away. The size gives it away – there is so much room for improvement there!”

9. Salema

Vital statistics: 32 23 34

Dress size: 6/8

Bottom type: The Pretty Pert (guessed correctly)

Single Salema Junior-Radford, 22, is a medical student at Newcastle
University, who lives in Norwich.

Before: “I am half Jamaican on my father’s side – my mother is English – and my racial heritage has given me a round and shapely bottom.

“I’m very proud of it and I am sure I will be able to spot it. The rest of my body is slim and that makes my bottom even more pronounced.

“I get lots of compliments about the shape and size – I think men like a rounded bottom on a woman.

“I wear tight- fitting jeans and dresses to show it off, and on the beach I am happy to wear tiny bikinis. I go to the gym three or four times a week and I run and swim.”

After: “I’ve never seen what I looked like from behind before. It’s pretty awkward looking at it naked. The picture is making me want to go on a diet.”
