Met’s Costume Institute announce ‘camp’ theme for 2019 Gala – and it’ll be co-chaired by Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, and Harry Styles
The curator of the Met's Costume Institute called Donald Trump a 'very camp figure'
THE Met Gala 2019's theme has just been announced, and things are about to get campy.
The "camp" theme is inspired by a 1964 essay in which American author Susan Sontag defined camp by its "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration".
It has just been announced that the co-chairs chosen to join Anna Wintour on the board in 2019 are singers Lady Gaga and Harry Styles, who are both known for their huge artistic influence.
Sportswoman Serena Williams is the last celebrity co-chair, although she, along with Gaga and Styles, did not attend this year's Gala.
Anna Wintour is the leading lady of the event, overseeing every detail and keeping the exclusive guest list in check, but every year a selection of influential celebrities are chosen to co-chair.
This year's theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and saw a lot of incredible costumes grace the floor.
The full title of 2019's theme is Camp: Notes on Fashion.
Past themes have included Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology, China: Through the Looking Glass, Punk: Chaos to Couture, and Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.
And while speaking about the theme for next year's event, the final co-chair of the Gala and curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton referred to a very controversial camp figure.
In his opinion, President Donald Trump embodies modern day camp.
He told The New York Times: "Whether it's pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it's very timely."
Vogue editor-in-chief and head chair Anna Wintour has stated she would never invite Donald Trump to the Met Gala, despite him attending prior to his run for President.
Trump last attended a Met Gala in 2012, however, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared attended in 2016.
Previous co-chairs for the Gala have included Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Pharrell Williams, and Jeff Bezos.
This year's co-chairs were Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace.
