Stacey Solomon: Forget Wanderlust! Joe watches endless rom-coms with me because he knows romantic sex turns me on
When it comes to sex on screen our Fabulous columnist is a self-confessed prude
I KNOW it won’t surprise anyone to learn that I’m a bit of a prude when it comes to TV sex.
After watching two episodes of the BBC's recent raunch-fest Wanderlust I was turning off rather than being turned on.
The sex scene when Joy lowered the blinds in her office and had some finger-fun with the guy she met at the pool made me cringe.
When she started masturbating and her son walked in, I just had to fast forward.
OK, yes, I think it’s great that people like the BBC are tackling such intimate issues.
Sex lives going stale, partners not wanting sex or couples whose relationship with sex has changed happens all the time, that's real life.
However, do I want to see it with all the fumbling and heavy-breathing as I have a cup of tea before bed? NO!
Ultimately, the sex scenes I like are those which are just suggestion.
Those that let you know that passionate sex is going to happen or happening but you don’t see any of the nitty gritty.
Take EastEnders’ Sharon and Keanu’s latest scenes.
Yes, the story line makes me wince and cringe. Sharon's flirting is beyond awkward but the so-called sex scenes weren’t too far in my opinion.
You know it's going to happen when she wraps her legs around him and hops on a table but then the director yells, "Cut" and I breath a sigh of relief.
It’s the kind of level that I'm comfortable with.
I don’t know why but that’s just my personal preference and I can appreciate that others feel differently and want to see more.
However, I’ve always found sex in my life as something really private and intimate. I don’t want to see in detail anyone else’s private intimate moments.
I suppose it's quite telling that my favourite sex scene ever is from How To Lose a Guy In 10 days, when Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have a chat in the bathroom then end up kissing in the shower. Feels Like Home is on the soundtrack and it's EVERYTHING.
It has me in tears every time.
That’s the kind of thing that I find sexy.
That’s the sex I dreamt of having. Romantic, in-love sex. That’s what I find a turn on.
Joe (much to his dismay) will sit through, and pretend to love films like Sleepless In Seattle or Bridget Jones because he’s aware of the pay off, if you know what I mean.
But this isn't a new thing, I was turned off being turned-on by telly a long time ago.
My sister and I mistakenly watched American Pie whilst still living at home with our parents.
I can tell you that there’s NOTHING more embarrassing than your dad and stepmum walking into your room whilst you’re watching somebody have sex with a pie. NOTHING.
Watching 90s classic film American Pie was beyond awkward for Stacey
I loved the parts of the movie that were about friends, leaving school, trying to lose your virginity because they were all things relevant to us at that age.
But I can honestly say I could have had the whole film without any of the awkward sex scenes.
I recently also watched BBC’s Bodyguard and I was pleasantly surprised at the fact that the passionate scenes weren’t too risky... until episode three. Why, oh why?
Up until that point I was thoroughly enjoying the series, but I couldn’t help cringing watching somebody put their hands down their pants and, well I can’t even write the rest.
For me, that was too much.
But I just want a simple story line and to be able to decide in my own imagination what happens next.
I don’t want to be shown it in graphic detail.
Of course, I’m glad that post-watershed telly feels like it can venture into the unknown and display sex in ways it’s never been able to before, but I just wish there was an option button.
Maybe a hardcore or softcore option?
So before you start watching you can chose what kind of romping you want to see.
Sometimes it’s just shoved in your face when you least expect it and there’s nothing you can do to erase those memories from your mind.
