From her trusted staff to police protection, these are all the things Diana lost when her marriage officially ended...

1. Her title

When Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles in 1981, the new Royal wife became known as Her Royal Highness.

But following her divorce from Prince Charles, her title changed to Diana, Princess of Wales.

According to the of Prince Charles and Diana's divorce settlement, the Queen had been willing to let Diana keep her title but her eldest son was "said to be adamant that she give it up."

Diana's demoted status therefore meant that the late Princess had to curtsy to those with the title, including her 14-year-old son Prince William - who insisted he would reinstate his mother's title when he became King.

2. Her police protection

According to the author of , Tina Brown, Diana was also stripped of the security given to members of the Royal Family.

During her marriage to Prince Charles, Princess Diana's safety was of critical importance to the monarchy.

But after their divorce was finalised, Diana was only given police protection when attending a public event and had to fund private bodyguards herself in her day-to-day life.

3. Her travel budget

As part of the divorce settlement, the New York Times also reported that Diana was awarded a lump sum of £17 million and granted an annual stipend of £400,000 to live on.

Although Royal Family members are given an annual travel budget which allows them to stay in exclusive accommodation, Diana had to fund her own travel following the split and all her overseas work (including her regular charity trips) had to be approved by the Queen first.

4. Her office

Along with her travel limitations, Diana had to give up her residence in St James's Palace because it was next door to Prince Charles' office.

Instead, Diana relocated to an office in the grounds of Kensington Palace.

However, the divorce settlement also stated that Diana was still able "to use the state apartments at St James's Palace for entertaining" provided she had been granted permission first.

5. Her staff

After moving to Kensington Palace, Diana also had to reduce her personal staff.

According to Tina Brown, Diana was allowed to have a cleaner, cook and personal dresser for her private residence.

This sizeable reduction from is what allowed Diana's butler Paul Burrell  to play such an important role in her life, as her close friend also became her assistant, driver, confidant and "crying towel".

6. Her charity commitments

Among her many achievements, Princess Diana was most famous for her charity work - a trait that she has passed down to her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

But while the Princess was allowed to support 100 charities throughout the course of her marriage, this was reduced to just six after her divorce.

This is because she had less funds to support her work overseas and had to choose the causes most important to her.

7. Her romantic relationship

Before her divorce was finalised in 1996, Princess Diana began dating Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan.

And according to Diana's biographer, the late Princess even considered leaving the UK to live with her lover in Pakistan.

However, their romance ended just weeks before Diana died in 1997 because of the intense public interest in her personal life thanks to the divorce.

Dr Khan previously described how they became "inseparable" after a chance meeting in 1995 and claims the late Princess inspired him to pursue charity work abroad.

8. Her friendships

Along with the loss of her relationship, Diana's divorce also took its toll on her friendship with Italian designer Gianni Versace.

The two reportedly fell out over the book which they co-wrote together and this dispute is also said to have caused tension in her friendship with Sir Elton John.

However, Diana and Elton repaired their relationship after Gianni's murder in July 1997.

Tragically, Diana's difficult divorce also affected her emotional stability.

As a result of the intense public interest in personal life, Diana is believed to have a growing fear that she was being spied on and reportedly had her Kensington Palace residence checked for listening devices in the months before her death.

According to Tina Brown, Diana feared she was going to be murdered and even worried that one of her personal bodyguards could be planning to kill her.
