Meghan will have learned the secret angle you put your cutlery at if you don't want staff to clear your plate away
MEGHAN Markle has had a steep learning curve since she became a duchess – and it turns out she can’t even just nip to the loo at dinner.
The royal family has a strict etiquette when it comes to using the toilet during a meal, including what to say and how to place your cutlery.
Typically members of the family can’t usually just get up and go during fancy meals, according to an etiquette expert.
, founder of told the Sun Online: “You would not excuse yourself to go to the lavatory. You would stay for the entire meal. You’d never leave to go to the bathroom to take a call.”
However, when nature really does call urgently, you can’t announce your intentions to the room but you have to say “excuse me” and leave.
Myka said: “You would never say pardon me, as a duchess, you would always say excuse me. Pardon me is a term reserved for service staff. So Meghan would just say ‘please excuse me’.”
And it turns out there are a number of rules Meghan will now have to follow if she wants to return to her plate without it getting cleared away.
Myka said: “It’s all about the how cutlery comes off the table, it never touches it again.
“In England and America you take a maximum of four bites and then you would break and you would put the fork on the left and the knife on the right, blades facing in always, outside is a sign of aggression to your neighbour.
“Prongs facing down signifies to service staff you are taking a break.”
Royal family members can also cross their utensils to show that the plate is still in use.
If Meghan isn't done with her meal when she heads to the loo, she will have to place her cutlery at an angle.
Myka said: “At the end of the meal to show to service staff you are finished, the prongs would come up. The blade still faces the fork.
“In England the knife and the fork go from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock.”
You can also place the handles at the bottom right of the plate, similar to 4.20pm on a clock, to signal that you haven't finished with your meal if you do have to nip to the loo.
These would also need to be crossed to make sure the message is clear (this sounds very complicated to us).
Myka added: “Tiny little intricacies that the Duchess of Sussex will have had to learn in great detail and this would have happened inside the palace walls.”
And forget the mantra of food being left is a sign of rudeness.
The etiquette expert said: “In America or Great Britain you leave a little bit on your plate to show you are satisfied.
“But in some other countries it is crucial to finish everything on your plate to show your host you enjoyed the meal.
“That will be shared with them ahead of time because it is so important.”
And Meghan will even have to make sure her hair is in the correct position for the dinner table.
Myka explained: “Hair goes behind the shoulders or up when you are dining.
“There is no grooming at the meal. There is no reapplication of lipstick. You have to make sure your hair and make-up is perfect ahead of time.”
Myka also revealed the secret item Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton wear underneath dresses to avoid flashing their knickers.
This is the unusual thing that Meghan Markle always does before travelling to avoid getting ill.
And the Duchess of Sussex could receive THIS secret travel item from the Royal Family for her future trips.
