ASK BEAUTY EDITOR LAUREN

I love gel nails, but hate having to pay to remove them. How can I do it at home? Bev, Cardiff

The key is to remove the top layer of polish with a file. This doesn’t mean gently buffing away the top, it means getting hardcore with filing until the top of your polish is completely gone – it should look white. Then apply acetone-soaked cotton pads to each nail and wrap with kitchen foil. Superdrug Artificial Nail Remover, £2.49, is brilliant. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then gently lift any leftover gel with a cuticle remover. The biggest mistake is to then apply regular polish. Your tips will be slightly softer after wearing gels and this will make standard varnish peel away, but they will return to normal after a few days. Instead, apply a nourishing oil like Jessica Phenomen Oil, £9.25, or pop on Seoulista Beauty Rosy Hands Instant Manicure Mask, £7.99, which contains vitamin C, as well as repairing Bulgarian rose oils and beeswax. Your hands will thank you for it – I’m obsessed.
