This is the major wardrobe change ALL royal women have to make after 6pm… and we bet you never noticed
It's all to do with strict protocol
MEGHAN Markle’s fashion choices have changed dramatically since she became a royal and one of the most obvious is that she’s rarely seen without a hat.
And this is all down to age-old tradition with royal protocol dictating since the 1950s that women from The Firm must wear hats to all formal royal occasions. Added to this, experts also believe wearing a hat after 6pm is an etiquette faux pas – which is perhaps why we rarely see any of the Royals wearing a headpiece to evening events.
According to Diana Mather, senior tutor for The English Manner etiquette consultancy, it was seen as inappropriate for royal women to reveal their hair in public.
“Up until the 1950s, ladies were very seldom seen without a hat as it was not considered ‘the thing’ for ladies to show their hair in public,” .
“But all that has changed and hats are now reserved for more formal occasions.”
This could explain why Meghan and Kate wear hats and fascinators for events such as christenings, weddings and birthdays – but often go without for royal engagements and visits.
And while Meghan has been opting for some ah-mazing hats recently (we loved her Philip Treacy design at Royal Ascot), she has been accused of breaking protocol in a very different way this week.
While visiting Dublin with her new hubby, Twitter users accused the duchess of breaking royal rules after an Irish politician suggested Meghan was pleased with the country’s referendum result on abortion.
But when it comes to fashion Meg certainly knows what she’s doing – and all these fascinators are giving us serious wedding guest outfit inspo.
Earlier this week, we revealed the secret reason why Meghan Markle wore this unusual item to Prince Louis’ christening.
