1. Boxing - 800 calories per hour

It's no secret that boxing is a great way to get the heart rate up.

If only as a way of releasing some of life's everyday stresses, right?

Well turns out, boxing is the most effective form of exercise for burning calories because it combines intense interval training while also engaging multiple muscle groups.

In other words, channel your inner-Rocky and fight it out for your summer bod in the ring.

2. Squash - 748 calories per hour

Just like boxing, squash is also a great high intensity workout perfect for shedding pounds.

As rallies typically last a lot longer than other racket sports, a squash match keeps participants on their toes as well as building their strength.

Because when it comes to raising that heart rate, the harder you work the better.

3. Rowing - 740 calories per hour

Now this one surprised us.

We all know that rowing is great cardio workout and works wonders for toning your arms and legs.

But while rowing on a body of water burns an amazing 740 calories an hour, rowing on a machine in the gym only results in a measly 440 calories burnt. Well, measly by comparison.

You know what to do - get down to your local rowing rental service for a super strenuous workout.

4. Running outside - 700 calories per hour

Heading out for a run is the first thing most people do when they want to lose weight.

After all, running is a surefire way to lift your heartrate and get the blood pumping round your body.

But if you're going to commit to running then it's worth keeping your workouts outdoors.

Jumping on a treadmill only burns 580 calories per hour by comparison.

An amazing workout if you're suffering from joint problems or just want to improve your overall fitness, doing the front crawl or butterfly stroke burns a cool 680 calories per hour.

Moral of the story? Try something else other than the gym...
