AIR DROP FLOP

What is cyber flashing, where do the unsolicited sexual images come from and how do i stop them?

iPhone's AirDrop feature is incredibly handy but can also be very dangerous

If you have an iPhone, chances are you've either used or heard of AirDrop.

The feature, which was introduced in 2015 allows users to send images to those close to them in proximity, here's why it's so problematic..

What is cyber flashing?

Cyber flashing is when you receive unsolicited sexual images of someone over the phone.

However, it can become a lot more complicated than the already intrusive nude on Snapchat.

AirDrop, the iPhone feature is being used by strangers to send naked pictures of themselves to people near them in busy public areas.

It's usually done anonymously, as all you can see when you're sent an image- which isn't censored when the preview comes up - is the name of the iPhone, and this can be personalised by the user to absolutely anything.

Who sends the images?

Anyone can send the images, and that's where the danger lies.

The feature on iPhones allowed anyone to send pictures to anyone, as long as they're within a close proximity and have AirDrop turned on and set to 'everyone' which most people do without thinking.

They do not know who they are sending the pictures to either, it could be to women, men or even children for all they know, as usually an iPhone name is only a first name, or a nickname.

Is it illegal?

If images of a sexual nature are sent without permission, it can be seen as sexual harassment.

It's a difficult area of the law and is hard to prove, however it should always be reported to the police.

Sometimes, the ones receiving the images can be under the age of 18, which is frightening and also extremely illegal.

This is an obvious offence and should be reported to the police immediately.

What can be done to prevent it?

The main step that can be taken to prevent this happening is turning off AirDrop.

Of course, it is entirely the sender of the images who are to blame, but steps can be taken to ensure your protection against it.
