Here’s how to tell your own fortune right now using the spooky art of stichomancy… and all you need is a book in your hand

Our new columnist Kerry King tells you how to read your own fortune using just a book

WANT to read your own fortune right NOW? Here’s how…

Most fortune telling, once the initial rules of engagement have been learnt, boils down to using your own intuition and instinct to ‘say what you see’.

It can take a long time to get there with practices like tarot or palmistry because there’s a lot to learn at first.

Once the symbols and meanings have been absorbed and understood, you’re free to go ‘off script’ to put a personal spin on them.

But this process can take a long time, which, frankly, puts a lot of would-be fortune tellers off.

However, there is one ancient method which requires NO training or arduous memorisation, and which anyone can do straight off the bat, and it’s called STICHOMANCY.

Stichomancy uses books. You simply open a book at random and apply your question, theme or issue to the first sentence your gaze falls upon.

And, seriously, that’s as difficult as it gets.

Traditionally, sacred books were used to predict the divinations.

Remember that books were once an extremely rare and precious thing (before the modern printing press) so having access to them likely indicated you were already an academic or spiritual leader.

The ancient Romans typically used the works of Homer and Virgil, Christians substituted the Bible.

Today, if we were to use the UK’s best-ever-sellers then it’d be Harry Potter, Fifty Shades and The Da Vinci Code…

How to do it

Start by considering and formulating what your question or issue is.

You should say it aloud, write it down, repeat it and refine it until it makes sense to you and feels right.

Be clear and confident that this is the question you want answered.

Next, choose a book. It could be what you’re currently reading, or your all-time favourite, or something which matches the theme of your question.

Let your intuition choose the title; don’t question or overthink your choice, just go with it. All of this is about exercising your intuitive mind.

Then, open the book and let it fall open and stay at whatever page feels right.

Scan the page until your gaze lingers on a paragraph, sentence, or even a word that seems to jump out at you or address your question or problem (again, don’t overthink it).

It might be a symbolic, literal or whimsical answer.

But, whatever you read, write it down and consider its meaning and your take on it.

Keep this phrase with you for at least a day, so your sub conscious has time to dwell on it too.

Who knows what goes on deep down inside… this is a means to access it.

Book suggestions for specific themes

If your question is of a romantic or relationship nature then perhaps choose something like:

  • He’s just not that into you by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo
  • How to be a woman by Caitlin Moran
  • Me before you by Jojo Moyes
  • The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

If you’re thinking about your career and future progress then perhaps:

  • #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso
  • Feel the fear and do it anyway by Susan Jeffers
  • Be Bulletproof by James Brooke

If you’re looking for inspiration or hope in times of trouble or uncertainty then try:

  • The road to character by David Brooks
  • If I could tell you just one thing by Richard Reed
  • The Universe has your back by Gabrielle Bernstein

Make this a regular thing

This is such an easy and immediate way to exercise and build your intuition that it can quickly become part of your weekly routine.

  • Sunbathing with a book? Let your mind wander onto something you’re dwelling on, and then flip the pages and see what you get…
  • Forget the standard ‘Book Club’ wine evenings- start a Stichomancy Circle with your friends. Bring your favourite books and do readings for each other. Add prosecco and it’s happy dayz.
  • If you’re reading last thing at night, pick a phrase to give your sub conscious something to ponder as you sleep. Who knows what insights you’ll awake to…
