Whatever you call it, farting, passing wind, popping off - it is essentially your body's way of getting rid of excess stomach gas produced during the day.

And it happens between five and 15 times a day, according to Medical News Today.

Not all farts smell, in fact some of them have no odour at all and don't even make a noise when they pass.

While others can be quite noisy and have a fairly offensive smell.

And in most cases it's nothing to worry about, but in others it could be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome or something more serious like bowel cancer.

Here are 11 ways to stop your boyfriend farting... and save your relationship.

1. Ban chewing gum

Chewing gum is the go to if you want to keep your breath fresh during the day, but it has an unwanted side effect.

While you are chewing away you are continually swallowing air.

That air builds up in your digestive system and makes you fart more.

2. Eat slow

Ever noticed that when you inhale your food you end up with a stomach ache afterwards?

You'll also end up with excess gas.

That's because the faster you eat the more air you swallow.

You can't avoid swallowing air all together, but slowing down the pace you eat at can reduce it.

3. Ditch skinny jeans

Tight fitting clothing may look good, but it's the enemy if you fart a lot.

That's because it makes you more uncomfortable if you suffer from bloating.

Looser fitting clothing is the best option if you are someone who bloats because it will allow air to pass out of your body more freely.

4. Know your allergies

If you have a food intolerance or allergy, you might find yourself suffering with gas.

Knowing what you are allergic to can help you avoid any unwanted problems.

Try eliminating all food that makes you gassy from your diet, then slowly introduce them back in one by one to find out exactly which one is causing the issue.

5. No carbs

Unfortunately, as tasty as they are, carbs are known to increase gas production in the body.

Carbohydrates contain fructose, lactose, insoluble fibre and starch, which all ferment in the intestine to cause gas.

But you shouldn't cut them out completely, your body needs carbs to survive.

Just try to limit the amount you eat.

You should also reduce the amount of beans and sprouts you eat, fizzy drink and fruit juices and oats.

6. Stub it out

The cigarettes themselves don't cause you to fart, but the air you swallow when you smoke does.

People who smoke swallow more air than people who don't.

And if that's not enough reason to give up fags, there are plenty of other health benefits like a reduced risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer.

7. Stay hydrated

There are many reasons you should be drinking plenty of water, and farting less is one of those benefits.

When you are well hydrated you poo and other waste products pass through your body more freely, so there is less likely to be an uncomfortable build-up of air.

You should try to drink a glass of water with every meal to help with digestion.

8. Exercise

Keeping active can also aid your digestive system.

People who keep fit tend to have a healthier digestive system than people who don't exercise.

It doesn't have to be much, a simple walk after a big meal can do wonders.

9. Ban beer

By now you are probably realising that swallowing air is a big culprit when it comes to flatulence.

Well, beer is no different.

The air in the drink can get trapped in your digestive system and cause you to pop off more often than normal.

The same goes for fizzy drinks and sparkling water.

Any carbonated drink is a no go.

A RARE BUT SERIOUS CAUSE OF FARTING

IT'S very rare, but in some cases farting too much can be a sign of bowel cancer.

If you have the disease you will most likely notice other symptoms like blood in the stool or bloating first.

Bowel cancer has some pretty serious effects on the digestive system, such as constipation and diarrhoea - both of which can cause farting.

And if something is obstructing the bowel that can also cause you to pass more wind.

There are the red flags signs of bowel cancer to look out for:

  • bleeding from the back passage, or blood in your poo
  • a change in your normal toilet habits - going more frequently for example
  • pain or a lump in your tummy
  • extreme tiredness
  • losing weight

10. Manage constipation

Constipation can actually be caused by excess gas.

It's a gross fact, but if poo remains in your bowel for too long it continues to ferment and creates more farts.

If this is happening to you it will smell awful too.

Drinking lots of water and increasing your fibre intake can help.

But if you are someone who regularly gets constipated you should speak to a GP.

11. Take a supplement

Probiotics and enzyme supplements are both great for aiding digestion.

Some research suggests that enzyme supplements can help breakdown proteins and carbs in the body, helping them pass through your system faster.

Other evidence suggests that probiotics keep your gut healthy, which is important for breaking down food quickly.

But if you are constantly suffering from too much gas, it is a good idea to speak to your doctor before trying a supplement.
