Domestic abuse survivor who had her wrists severed by jealous husband gets new bionic hand
Margarita Grachyova's husband chopped off her hands in a brutal attack last December, but the brave mum has now shown off her new artificial limb
A BRAVE mum of two who had her wrists cut off by her abusive ex-husband has shown off her new bionic hand.
Russian Margarita Grachyova, 25, flew to Germany for the incredible operation, where she was fitted with specially-designed artificial limbs.
Last December, Margarita’s ex-husband Dmitry Grachyov, 26, drove her to a forest, where he tied her up and axed off both her hands from the wrist.
Doctors managed to save her left hand despite eight broken bones, and she will hopefully regain 70 per cent use of it.
However, although her right hand could not be restored, just three months after the attack, Margarita has been given two new artificial limbs, which she can alternate.
She has remained positive despite her traumatic ordeal, and told her two children: "Now your mum has hands like a robot."
German doctors used electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles, and Margarita is now learning to operate her new hand.
She has returned to Russia, and although she still struggles to even get dressed herself, she has said: “I am in great mood, ready to solve all my problems.
“My health is my priority now. Many thanks to all those who helped me to get used to my new life. I know it is just the beginning of my way.”
Dmitry became violent after she had demanded a divorce, and he saw text messages on her phone with a male colleague.
He assumed that she was having an affair, and Margarita said: “Something flipped in his mind.”
“This is something from Medieval times, inconceivable, unreal, it just could not happen.”
“I think he had read somewhere about this exact sort of torture.”
Dmitry - who handed himself into the police - is now receiving psychiatric checks before his trial, and if he is found guilty, could face up to 15 years in prison, or undergo treatment if he is not deemed to be sane.
Margarita has claimed that she received letters from him saying that he will kill her if she doesn’t wait for him to be released.
She explained: “He seriously thinks that now he has punished me, we have a hope of a happy life in future.
“I don’t have any words left for him. I am trying to forget this story and to think positively about the future.”
