Researchers at Protectivity analysed some of the most popular protein bars and the results may shock you.

They reveal that many of our favourite brands contain more sugar and fat than a Krispy Kreme doughnut.

Just under half of the 52 brands analysed contain more fat than a doughnut and ten of those contain more sugar.

One Krispy Kreme doughnut contains 12.6g of sugar compared to 19.5g in PowerBar’s Protein Plus 30% Lemon Cheesecake bar.

The overall bar with the highest saturated fat and sugar was Yorkie's Protein Chocolate Crisp Bar, containing nearly 40% of sugars.

Nutritionist Will Hawkins said: "A lot of these products are made with synthetic sweeteners or sugar, neither of which has much nutritional value.

"While bars can provide the level of protein needed for building and repairing muscles, they often lack a lot of the essential amino acids that are the true building blocks of muscle building".

Will goes on to recommend drinking a shot of espresso an hour before exercising and yoghurt straight after working out.
