Blackpool’s Stanley Park named best park in the UK… and here’s how to stay nearby for only £9.50
A PARK in Blackpool has been named the best in the UK at a prestigious award ceremony.
Stanley Park – one of the seaside town’s hidden gems – was crowned the nation’s favourite outdoor space at the annual Fields in Trust Awards.
It was voted the winner by the public, cementing the city’s status as a popular holiday destination.
The park, which celebrated its ninetieth birthday, beat three other finalists – Craigavon City Park in County Armagh, Roath Park in Cardiff and Rouken Glen Park in East Renfrewshire.
Helen Griffiths, chief executive of Fields in Trust, said: “The people of Blackpool have sent a clear message that they love their local park and I hope that Blackpool Council will recognise this by working with us to safeguard Stanley Park as a place for community sport, play and recreation forever.”
The Fields in Trust Charity, which counts His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge as its president, protects the UK’s vital open spaces.
Now in its third year, the competition showcases some of the UK’s best open spaces.
This year the public nominated 360 parks in total from across the UK with more than 15,000 votes cast.
The awards were presented by former Wales and Lions rugby player Brynmor Williams, chairman of The Fields in Trust Wales Committee.
Stanley Park was designed by celebrated landscape architect Thomas Mawson in the 1920s.
It boasts an Italian marble fountain, boating lake, bandstand, gardens and Art Deco styled cafe.
