What should you drink at the Christmas party? Here are 7 alcoholic drinks ranked from bad to worst for your skin
WITH Christmas party season in clear sight, the majority of us will undoubtedly be knocking back a tipple or two in the coming weeks.
But could your boozy beverage of choice be wreaking havoc with your skin?
Some of our festive favourites do more harm than others when it comes to upsetting your complexion.
So, if you’re worried about how your skin looks come Santa time, you may want to re-consider which drinks you down in the run-up.
Dr Sam Bunting, one of London’s top cosmetic dermatologists, told Cosmopolitan which drinks do the most damage.
Here are some of the most popular drinks, marked from bad to worst.
Tequila
It may come as a shock. But tequila isn’t quite as bad as you may think.
The spirit has a very high-purity and contains less sugar than most other alcoholic counterparts – so inflammation in the skin is less likely.
Also, if you skip the salt the drink is also far more skin-friendly.
But, be warned... the tipple is only skin-safe when drunk straight (not in Margaritas or similar - more on that below...)
Beer
Beer isn’t great for your face, but it’s not the worst out of all booze.
Beer contains less alcohol than spirits and even contains some anti-ageing benefits because of anti-oxidants that it contains.
Beer drinkers also tend to drink their pints more slowly than other drinks – so they become less dehydrated.
Gin and tonic
Both gin and vodka are relatively low in sugar and salt – so are far less unkind to our skin than drinks that do.
White wine
This is where things begin to get a bit “iffy” for our skin.
Wine hangovers are notoriously bad, and those who enjoy a glass (or three) won’t be surprised to hear that the drink doesn’t to our skin any favours.
White wine is high in sugar and Dr Sam says it has “zero redeeming qualities” when it comes to our health.
Yikes.
Mojito
Put the glass down, cocktail lovers.
These are super bad for our faces in terms of sugar – and as such wrinkles.
Excess sugar can lead to systemic inflammations which can in turn lead to increased skin ageing.
Keep those tipples low sugar if you want to keep the wrinkle-risk down.

Margarita
Another cocktail culprit.
As said above, cocktails can be laden with sugar and when it comes to a tasty margarita there is also salt involved.
This can lead to a puffy face and dehydrated skin, on top of the increased chance of wrinkles mentioned above.
Stick to drinking tequila straight (if that's your spirit of choice...)
Red wine
It may seem like the “civilised” choice, but red wine is one of the worst drinks for your face.
According to Dr Sam: Red wine is also a histamine released which promotes redness and flushing.
“This makes it the worst drink, particularly if you’re prone to redness or rosacea.”
