And now London-based Heist is climbing the style ladder. The label promises it has designed the “perfect pair”, which do not roll down or sag.

They are made from stretchy fabric and have been designed with less seams and a flattering waistband, instead of the classic – and unattractive – cycling shorts gusset.

But the revolutionary hosiery does not come cheap, at £22 per pair. So does Heist beat the socks off its rivals?

We asked our model Tinna Bergsdotter, 30, from West London, to put a range of 40 denier black tights to the lunge test, to see whether they stretch or sag, and to give them a rating out of five.

Tinna said: “These look as though I’m wearing cycling shorts over tights.

“The thick waistband is super flattering on the tum, but I’m not a fan of tights that could be mistaken for shorts.”

Wolford 2.5/5

 Tights, £34, at uktights.com; bralet, £12, and matching knickers, £8, Marks & Spencer; heels, £22, missguided.co.uk

Tinna said: “I never splash out on tights - so the price-tag for these just seems ludicrous.

“They are however, thick and tough, so you can pull these on without having to worry about snagging.

“But I’m not a fan of the seam, the stitching is thick so it is really noticeable.”

Primark 3.5/5

Tinna said: “For £3.50, these are not bad.

“A good choice for a cheap saviour, just don’t count on them for multiple wears as they are thin.

“As a result, you can’t be heavy-handed with them as they feel likely to ladder.

“But I like that they don’t have a horrible gusset in the crotch, it’s just a seam that runs from front to back.”

Tinna said: “I love the high waistband. It is flattering and perfect for hiding any lumps and bumps.

“The fabric is stretchy, smooth and soft on my skin - they are sturdy enough to lunge in without any laddering, too.

“I don’t usually like wearing tights because they cling round my toes, but as the seam is underneath on this pair, they are really comfortable.

“As they are good quality, they are worth splashing out on.”

Debenhams 1.5/5

Tinna said: “I’m not impressed by these tights at all.

“The consistency of the material is patchy - I have sheer blobs dotted all over my legs.

“They are the same deniers as all the others, yet these feel fragile in comparison.

“Wouldn’t want to pull these on in a hurry - I’d be worried about laddering them.”

Tinna said: “These are defintely robust enough for winter - and less than a tenner.

“I can lunge in them and don’t need to worry about any snags.

“They are warm yet breathable and the fabric is supersoft.

“I bet these will see you through winter with no problems.”
