‘Infertile’ woman, 38, has a baby with OAP husband, 77 – after he lied and said he was 10 YEARS younger

A BACKPACKER who believed she was infertile has found love and had a baby with a pensioner who is 39 years older than her.

Kat King, 38, met OAP Kevin King, 77, while backpacking through Australia.

At more than twice her age, people often mistake Kat’s bespectacled, grey-haired hubby Kevin for her grandfather - but Kat says she has never felt more content.

And, although Kevin originally shaved a whopping 10 years off his real age, only revealing his true age the day before the wedding, the pair have gone from strength to strength.

A row brought the couple, who met in January 2007, together.

Already friends, they had decided to travel together, when they had a showdown in a supermarket.

Kat, who began her backpacking adventure in mid-2006, when she left her native Germany for Australia, said: “We were just friends, and I would stay in his nice caravan in return for cooking for him.

“While we shared his double bed, there was no funny business.

“But, one day in summer 2007, in a supermarket, he bumped into me by accident and I reacted furiously and stormed off – threatening to leave him and travel alone.

”After a row, we kissed and made-up and, shortly afterwards, became a couple.”

Just a few months later, in August 2007, Kevin proposed to Kat with a silver ring – and she said “yes”.

That autumn she returned to Germany to tell her mum, Carla Hoffman - who was in her 50s but has sadly since died from cancer - she was planning to marry Kevin.

Understandably, Carla was shocked – especially as Kevin’s oldest daughter Debbie was 14 years Kat’s senior.

Kat added: “She understood when I told her how much I loved him.

“Other people weren’t so positive, though.

“They thought he was too old for me, especially as he had been mistaken for my grandad.”

And it came as a shock to Kat who, until the day before her November 2007 wedding, believed she and her beau had a 29 year ago gap, to discover that he had lied.

She said: “He told me the truth – that he was 39 years older than me.

“He’d shaved ten years off.

“But by that point, it was too late.

“There was no point in getting annoyed as I was in love.”

Ahead of their wedding, in Debbie’s garden in Tasmania, only she, the couple and Kat’s mum knew they were tying the knot – everyone else believed they were having a party.

Kate added: “They were so surprised when they discovered the truth.

“But it was a lovely day. I wore a white dress and it was perfect.”

Kat moved permanently to Tasmania but, in 2008, tragedy struck when Kevin had a stroke - fortunately, he recovered.

And, in September 2010, baby Pierre, now seven, was born.

Kat discovered she was pregnant at the doctor’s, where she had booked an appointment to investigate her unexplained infertility.

She explained: “We were sort of trying for a baby.

“We thought, ‘If it happens, it happens.

“But when it didn’t, I realised I really wanted it to.

“That’s why – after more than a year of trying – I was at the doctor’s.

“We were both absolutely thrilled when I found out I was pregnant – even more so when Pierre was born on September 10, weighing a healthy 7lb 4oz.”

And, rather than the usual birth announcements in the local press, little Pierre’s arrival was heralded by screaming headlines, including, “Oh boy, Kev a new dad at 70!” and “Man, 70, becomes Tassie’s oldest dad.”

Unfortunately, Kevin’s health has taken a downwards turn since – leading to him recently having open heart surgery.

He had his dodgy heart valve replaced with a cow’s valve.

Kat added: “When the surgeon heard about me they joked with him, saying, ‘We made it extra strong, so you can live for a long while yet.’”

“I know my choices might seem strange to some people. But I’m proof that age is just a number and you’re never too old for love.”
