GRAN Margaret Hedges has her central heating so high she was able to grow a pineapple.
The 78-year-old keeps her home toasty all year, so son Martin decided to see if the tropical plant would thrive there.
The carpenter, 52, had started trying to nurture the exotic fruit in his greenhouse four years earlier.
But he had no joy until he moved it to a bedroom window at his mum’s place.
Martin said: “I knew that I needed somewhere hot for it to work and I thought there’s nowhere hotter than my mum’s because it’s like a blast furnace in there.”
Margaret, who gets chilly easily, spent an estimated £4,000 in heating bills in the three years it took to grow in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.
She said: “Every time my son visited he would rush up to the little bedroom and ask how the plant was doing.
“Then one particular day he just couldn’t believe it — there was a small flower coming up. It was such a surprise.
“From that, it’s just gradually grown.”
The pair are now planning to enjoy pineapple chunks and ice-cream.
