Forget double yolks! Texas farmer is shell-shocked to find smaller egg inside another
Texas farmer Gary was left shell-shocked by this eggstraordinary discovery
THIS giant chicken egg is hiding an eggstraordinary secret, and it’s not your standard double-yolker.
Texas farmer Gary discovered that his seven-month-old hen Gertrude was laying eggs with another egg inside them, shells and all.
The eggceptional find has been captured on camera, as Gary and a female companion can be seen cracking open the two eggs – which both have a standard yolk and white inside.
In the video, Gary described the find as a “double egger”.
He added: “Yep, who’s got the best chickens? No double egg – that’s for wimps. No we’ve got double eggers. It looks healthy, right?”
“It’s big,” his friend said. “Poor chicken!”
Gary later said that, despite the egg’s abnormal size, Gertrude the chicken is fine – while the eggs tasted perfectly normal.
The eggciting phenomenon is called counter-peristalsis contraction.
What the cluck?
Sometimes an egg forms within another egg because of a process called counter-peristalsis contraction, according to .
Chickens normally release an oocyte, which later becomes the yolk of an egg, every 18-26 hours.
But, in rare cases, a second oocyte can be released before the egg has travelled down the oviduct and been laid.
This causes a contraction, and the first oocyte is pushed back into the hen’s body.
The two oocytes then make their way out of the body together – allowing two shells to form around them at the same time.
Double yolkers often make headlines. Most recently, The Sun exclusively brought you the story of a man who beats odds of 84 TRILLION to one to crack seven double-yolkers.
While this dad was left shell-shocked after discovering TEN double-yolkers from a box of a dozen eggs.
