Have you been applying your fake tan all wrong? These are the 8 common mistakes we make when attempting to get that summer glow
SUMMER is on the way, so if you want to look bronzed before you strip off your bikini, faking it can be the only way to look beach ready.
But according to Marissa Carter, founder of tan brand Cocoa Brown, home tanners fall foul of simple mistakes. She's shared some of the biggest tanning slip ups for you to avoid.
1. Not using a tanning mitt
Tan stained hands is a huge giveaway that your tan may not be real, so using a good quality mitt is a must to getting an even tan all over and protecting your palms.
2. Not avoiding the eyebrows
You can also add a small amount of petroleum jelly through your eyebrows to prevent the tan from discolouring them.
3. Over applying
Preparation is key! Many people forget to exfoliate before reapplying their tan which can lead to patchy skin and discoloration. Use a good body scrub 24 hours prior to application will prevent this.
4. Drinking or brushing your teeth too soon
Let your tan dry before having a drink or brushing your teeth as accidental drips may wash away the colour and leave you with streaks.
5. Staining your nails
Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate.
6. Exaggerating dark circles around your eyes
Again, a little bit of petroleum jelly will stop the tan from further darkening the area – no one likes panda eyes.
7. Exfoliating too soon
The first time you shower after you’ve applied your tan, use shower gel but don’t exfoliate your skin.
8. Going too dark
Embrace your natural complexion by wearing a tan to suit your skin tone.
Try using a product that can be developed for less time for a golden glow and longer if you want a deeper tan.
