What is mindfulness? From colouring books to exercise and meditation, the mental wellbeing practice explained
Mindfulness is knowing what is happening inside and outside ourselves moment by moment
MINDFULNESS is used in schools, prisons, businesses and to treat depression - but what is the mental wellbeing practice?
With colouring books and meditation exercises promising to help us achieve mindfulness, here's our guide.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is knowing what is happening inside and outside ourselves moment by moment, according to Mark Williams, director of the .
Mr Williams says the practice involves reconnecting with sensations.
It also sees us reconnect with our bodies, thoughts and feelings.
It is believed that greater awareness of the present moment will allow people to positively change their view of themselves and their lives.
It is thought that becoming more aware of emotions and patterns can help people notice and respond to changes in their mental health.
Mental health charity says the practice can help people to be more aware of their feelings, manage unhelpful thoughts, develop responses to difficult feelings and events, be kinder to themselves, manage stress and cope with physical pain.
