The agreement contains complex bonus clauses based on the shared percentages of syndication payments received from more than 170 countries in which the show is broadcast.

The stars will also benefit from payments from re-runs, with episodes earning audiences of 23 million people during the sixth season.

These record-breaking salaries mean they have earned more than the stars of Friends and The Big Bang Theory, who famously negotiated £764,000 per episode.

The seventh season of the HBO drama hits UK TV screens tonight, with producers spending £7.6 million on each episode.
