You may be cleaning your toilet all wrong… and this common mistake could turn your loo into a health hazard

This gross fact will change the way you clean the loo in future

WHILE it's no surprise that toilet bowls harbour plenty of germs, there’s one common cleaning mistake that could be turning it into even more of a health hazard.

No matter how obsessively clean you are about your loo, if you are putting the toilet brush away wet, you need to read on.

No matter how clean you think your toilet is, this common mistake can turn it into a health hazard

Why is it dangerous?

When you use the brush to scrub the bowl, the bacteria from stools is transferred onto the bristles.

If it is then placed back in the holder, the moist conditions provide the perfect environment for the nasty bacteria to multiply.

Over time, they build up, making the brush you use to clean the loo with more unclean, spreading the harmful bacteria further.

Keeping your bathroom clean is vital, as it's the room you use to keep yourself hygienic - because nobody wants to shower in a dirty room

How should you clean it instead?

Rinsing the brush under a hot tap is not enough to solve the problem.

Hygiene expert Stephanie C, from , said: “Bacteria thrives in moist environments, so storing your toilet brush in this way encourages germ multiplication.

“In order to minimise this risk, the toilet brush should be bleached after each use to kill germs, then left to sit over the toilet bowl until dry.

“It can then be replaced in the holder.”

Are there any other ways to clean the loo?

Many experts actually advise against using a toilet brush altogether.

In their home tips guide The Cleaning Bible, Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie  call the brushes “an unworthy compromise for strict hygiene.”

They recommend sticking on the rubber gloves and getting into the bowl with cleaning products instead.

They also recommend emptying a can of COLA around bowl, leaving it overnight and then flushing in the morning.
