ON THE FENCE

My neighbour built a privacy wall on TOP of my fence – it’s not just ugly, I’m worried it could fall & crush my kid

Plus, how you can safely add privacy to your own garden

IT'S not as common as it once was to be friends with your neighbours, but many still like to stay on good terms.

But that all went out the window for one homeowner after their next door neighbour added a dodgy privacy fence to their garden.

Instead of paying the professionals to add some height to the already existing garden fence, the neighbour decided to take matters into their own hands.

The finished product was so bad the homeowner took to Reddit to rant about it - and they're not the only one who raised some concerns.

Posting on Reddit, the explained that the red fence is theirs, but the dodgy looking wall was recently added by their neighbour.

"I've had mixed messages, some saying that it's susceptible to damp, others saying it's structurally fine and assume they'll render it to look better," they explained.

The homeowner went on to ask for other people's thoughts on the matter and added: "I'm really concerned it's structurally terrible and may fall over (I've got a child on the way!)"

It's not hard to see why the homeowner is so concerned, the wall doesn't exactly look structurally sound.

The cement is oozing out of the gaps, the bricks are uneven and there are even huge gaps - not exactly what you want, especially if you're going to have a little one running around soon.

Fellow Reddit users were just as shocked by the wall, as one commented: "Who put it up? Bob the blind builder?"

Someone else thought reporting the dodgy wall to the council was the homeowners best bet.

"Report it to your local council, but expect it to take a very long time to resolve," they commented.

I was sick of my neighbours peeping into my garden so made a DIY privacy fence - it was so easy and still looks as good as the day I made it

"Be polite and patient with them and try to get an actual person to give half a sh*t... or just give it a shove into their garden and deny all knowledge," they added.

A second urged the homeowner to report it and wrote: "Yes, you should definitely report that. It's an absolute farce of a wall."

And someone else had another idea: "Just pop out on a windy night and give it a firm nudge."

Meanwhile, someone else joked: "Never in my life have I put up a brick will but I'm confident I could do better."

And another said: "A good fart would bring that down, apart from being uglier than Pat Butcher's earrings it doesn't look anywhere near safe."

How to create privacy in your garden

CREATING privacy in your garden can be achieved in a number of ways depending on your budget, and the size of your space. Here are some effective ways to enhance privacy in your garden:

1. Fencing

  • Install a tall, solid wooden or vinyl fence. This is one of the most straightforward ways to gain immediate privacy. Or use lattice panels, trellis, or slatted fencing to add a decorative touch while still offering privacy.

2. Hedges and Plants

  • Fast-growing evergreen shrubs or trees like Leylandii, Thuja, or Bamboo along the boundary of your garden can help with privacy. Grow a dense hedge using plants like Boxwood, Privet, or Laurel. It may take time to grow, but it provides a natural and green privacy screen. Use climbers like Ivy, Clematis, or Wisteria on fences or trellises to create a lush, green privacy barrier.

3. Outdoor Curtains

  • Hang outdoor curtains around pergolas, gazebos, or patios for an easy-to-adjust privacy solution.

4. Sound Barriers

  • A water fountain or small waterfall can help drown out noise, adding to the sense of privacy. Or install fencing designed to reduce noise if privacy from sound is also a concern.
