MANY things annoy me about winter - the blistering wind, dry skin, and matted hair.

If like me, your hair never seems to look good during the colder weather no matter how many oils you put on it then it's time to bring out the big guns - hair gloss.

It seems the internet is going wild over the stuff - with over 175 million TikTok videos using the #to keep their locks in check.

I for one was not about to wait any longer to try it, celebrities like Amal Clooney and Madison Beer swear by the stuff to give their hair a refresh in an instant.

Hairstylist to the A-listers Demetris Giannetos told he swears by L'Oreal's Le Color Toning Hair Gloss to do Amal's hair.

His technique is to “massage the hair [from root] to ends” to make sure all of the strands are covered in the gloss treatment.

Madison Beer took to social media in a live video sharing her secret to frizz-free hair, saying: "I've seen so many TikToks about my hair, and people are like 'her hair's so shiny'.

"I get glosses pretty regularly."

I was ready to try the hack as soon as I could, especially if their hair was anything to go by.

What is a hair gloss?

“An at-home hair gloss is typically a semi-permanent hair treatment that adds shine and benefits the overall health and softness of your hair, ” says Brad Mondo, founder and creative director of XMONDO.

What's great about a hair gloss treatment s that they usually take just five to ten minutes to do and won't process your hair as strongly as a hair dye - leaving it in good condition.

A hair gloss is designed to obviously add shine as well as even out the tone of your hair.

‘Can’t praise it enough’ fine-haired shoppers rave about bargain spray that ‘makes your locks thicker’, and you’ll get change from £6

How to use it

I decided to use the 5 Minute Lamination Treatment for Dull Hair which can be picked up for just £7.99 in Boots.

I used the product exactly as the instructions suggested - first washing my hair with shampoo and then conditioner.

Once both were rinsed out I took a good dollop of the hair gloss, which smelt like a salon and had an adorable pastel pink colour to it and applied it throughout my hair.

I then chilled in my bathrobe for the instructed five minutes while listening to my favourite true crime podcast (not instructed).

Expert advice on how often we should really be washing our hair

HAVE you ever wondered how often you should be washing your hair?

According to stylist Scott Miller of Bauhaus salons in Cardiff, , washing every day may be too much – and some people only need to wash once a week.

Hopefully, you're bathing yourself daily – but that doesn't mean you need to  along with your body.

Miller said that  every day, as some people do, might be overkill – and  will stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, making it more .

He told : “Unless you’ve been working really hard at the gym or have been on a building site and it’s covered in dust – you .

"There's a big # at the moment, with people boasting about going weeks without shampooing, but for most of us, cutting out one or two washes will make a big difference."

The frequency with which you should wash your hair depends on several factors, including your hair type, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Here are some general guidelines:

Hair Type:

Oily Hair: If you have oily hair, you might need to wash it more frequently, such as every day or every other day, to keep it looking fresh.

Dry Hair: Those with dry hair should aim to wash it less often, perhaps once or twice a week, to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.

Normal Hair: If your hair is neither too oily nor too dry, washing it two to three times a week is usually sufficient.

Lifestyle:

Active Lifestyle: If you exercise regularly or sweat a lot, you may need to wash your hair more frequently to remove sweat and dirt.

Less Active Lifestyle: If you're less active, you can extend the time between washes.

Scalp Health:

Dandruff or Scalp Conditions: If you have dandruff or other scalp conditions, consult a dermatologist for specific advice, as you may need to use specialised shampoos more frequently.

Hair Treatments:

Coloured or Chemically Treated Hair: If your hair is coloured or chemically treated, you may need to wash it less often to preserve the treatment and prevent damage.

Personal Preference:

Ultimately, how often you wash your hair is a personal choice. Some people prefer the feel of freshly washed hair, while others find that washing less frequently works better for them.

After I headed back to the shower to rinse it out.

I could feel that this definitely was no conditioner or shampoo - it did indeed feel like a hair dye when washing it out and almost had a grain texture to it.

But once it started draining down the plughole I could instantly feel just how smooth my locks were - more so than when I use a leave-in conditioner.

The results

I dried my hair with a blow dryer after, using just heat protection to keep it safe as I usually would.

Once done, I was pleasantly surprised.

My hair definitely felt super soft and smelt like I had just got a professional blowout.

I also found that my hair did indeed look much glossier than usual and less frizzy, plus my hair didn't matt together even when I went outside in the blistering wind - a total bonus.

Final thoughts

I loved how the left my hair feeling silky and shiny and would definitely add this to my routine.

In fact, I'm so impressed I think I'll switch my weekly deep conditioning treatment for the hair gloss.

While I might not be going on any red carpets soon like Amal or Madison, I'll be relying on it to see me through Christmas party season.
