Many of us may have switched to using the tumble dryer to make sure our towels dry properly, but this can be costly.

Drying towels on the radiator seems like a simple solution to this, as it doesn't use any extra energy if you already have the heating on.

However, cleaning experts at have revealed why this is a bad idea.

Never Dry Towels On The Radiator

The experts revealed that after washing your towels, it is a good idea to shake them as this opens up the fibres and loosens the "loop" structure, giving them a plusher feel.

However, the experts also warned: "Drying towels on radiators can result in a scratchy texture – so where possible, dry them outside on the line or tumble dry to keep them soft and fluffy."

Avoid Using Fabric Softener

Another common mistake homeowners make is using fabric softener when washing towels.

The experts revealed: "It might seem counterintuitive, but fabric conditioner works by coating the surface of fibres, so some experts say using it regularly on towels could actually hinder their absorbency.

"If you don’t want to skip the softener, just use it as an occasional treat rather than in every wash."

Towels Should Be Washed Every Week

The experts revealed that how often you should wash your towels depends on factors such as how how often you shower and how much exercise you do.

However, as a general rule, they said that towels should be washed around once a week.

The experts added: "When it comes to washing your towels, no matter the fabric composition of your towels, the first thing you should do is check their care labels for recommended washing instructions and follow the temperature guidance given.

They added that the ideal temperature to wash your towels at is 60 degrees.

However, some detergents are now designed to be effective at lower temperatures.

Microfibre Towels

If you're sick of waiting days your towels to dry, microfibre ones are a great alternative.

Microfibre towels dry a lot faster than cotton towels, so are a great choice if thicker towels take too long to dry.

Not only that, but they can also absorb a lot more water - up to seven times their weight in it in fact - and they're great for sensitive skin and hair.

And while cotton towels can be quite pricey, you can buy a set of two microfibre towels for just £12.72 on Amazon.
