Q: I left school after A levels and immediately began working in a bank, first in a branch, then gradually moving my way up.

Now I’m in my early 40s, I work at head office and have a load of responsibility.

I can’t imagine doing any other job, as I’ve only ever worked for this company, but I also can’t imagine how I will do this for another 20-30 years.

I have a family as well as a dog, and my parents aren’t in the best of health – and juggling all of that with my job has left me feeling burnt out.

Financially, I will need to work for many years yet, but the future just feels bleak. How do I stop feeling so overwhelmed?

A: I understand how overwhelming work can feel, especially when you also have personal responsibilities.

Feeling drained or disengaged from your career are clear indicators of burnout, so your priority should be your mental health.

While it may seem hard to fit it in, taking time for physical activity, hobbies or relaxation is crucial.

Even short walks or mindful moments can make a difference to your mental wellbeing.

Rather than focusing on the long-term, try breaking down your responsibilities into smaller, more manageable goals, as completing these can give a sense of accomplishment.

Prioritise key tasks, see if there is anything you can delegate or share with others, and remember, sometimes “no” is the most important word we can say.

Look at other positions within the organisation that might be less stressful or more aligned with your interests and start exploring roles that could give you a way out in the future.

It’s clear you’re juggling a lot, so be sure to acknowledge your resilience and give yourself some credit.
