However, they can go brown pretty quickly after you buy them, which means they often go to waste.

With that in mind, cooking fan Zakiyya AK Manjoo revealed her simple trick to stop bananas from going brown straight away.

Taking to TikTok, the busy mum said: "Are you sick of buying bananas, only for them to go brown in two days?"

Explaining her hack, Zakiyya recommended purchasing some clingfilm, which you can pick up from the supermarket for 99p.

Cut it in to strips, and then wrap a strip of cling film around the stalk of each of your bananas.

Zakiyya demonstrated the hack, and then showed how her bananas looked, almost a week later.

"After five days, the most they have on them is a few black dots", she said.

"This hack actually works."

Fridge or cupboard? The essential food storage guide

Foods must be stored correctly to keep them fresh and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Nutrition expert Birgit Brendel said bread will last longer when stored in the fridge or freezer.

However, this can compromise the flavour.

Storing in ceramic or pottery containers is an alternative that allows for air to flow easily and slow the growth of mould.

Robert Morris, managing director of food safety consultants, Complete Food Safety, revealed the best place to store fresh fruit and vegetables.

He said salad foods should be stored in the fridge drawer, but away from anything grown in the soil such as carrots, parsnips and beetroot.

Tomatoes are an exception to the rule as fridges can alter the natural ripening process and diminish their taste.

He also advised against putting avocados and bananas in the fridge as this will cause them to blacken quicker.

And Zakiyya isn't the only one to swear by this hack.

Food expert Mike, took to his YouTube channel to share how he was able to keep his bananas fresh for a whopping 15 days with this trick.

He said: "Day 12 we still had a little bit of green on the bananas.

“Day 15 - you’ll notice there’s still some green on the bananas.

“When we cut it open you’ll notice there’s a little bit of bruising on the bottom, but that’s the weight of the bananas causing the bruising in the container.

“As you can see, these bananas are still quite edible.”
