APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady answers your careers questions.
Here, Karren gives advice to a reader who wants to assert herself as a manager in a male-dominated industry.
Q: I was recently promoted into a managerial role for a mechanical/plumbing firm – although it’s male-dominated, it’s committed to promoting women across the business.
However, as I don’t have much experience compared to others, I lack confidence and I’m sometimes reluctant to speak my mind.
The team I lead are strong and believe in me and the values I try to implement, but I’ve discovered a male colleague is trying to poach them behind my back.
I can’t help but think my politeness and lack of confidence allowed this to happen.

Consider seeking out a mentor or training to boost your skills, and join networks that support women in your industry.
Practise speaking up in meetings and asserting your leadership style – your voice is as important as anyone else’s.
Your promotion shows your manager trusts your ability, while your team’s confidence in you is a testament to your capabilities.
Seek feedback from your peers and manager on your leadership style.
As for your colleague attempting to poach people, speak to him to clarify the situation and ask him to show you the courtesy of talking to you before approaching your team.
By confronting the issue and fostering a supportive environment, you’ll continue to grow in your role.
