APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady answers your careers questions.
Here she gives advice to a self-employed reader who wants to grow their skill set for their career.
Q) I’m self-employed and love what I do – my days are varied and I have the flexibility to choose when I work, which fits in well around family commitments.
However, I see my employed friends get regular pay rises, promotions and training, and I’m wondering how to progress in my own career and grow my skill set.
Day rates in my industry tend to be within a certain range, and I feel like I’ve hit a ceiling in terms of earning potential. Do you have any suggestions?

A) It’s often said: “Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life!” And while this can be true, it’s rarely that straightforward.
Seeing friends thrive and benefit from traditional employment will naturally prompt thoughts about your own career.
So reflect on what you value most right now – is it the flexibility to choose your projects and working hours, or a desire to challenge yourself?
Your priorities may change, as what’s important to you now may be different in another few years.

If you want to push yourself, and you are willing to put in the extra hours, explore ways to do so.
You could take on more clients and increase the volume of your work, or you could expand what you offer.
This may take some training or qualifications, but if you are motivated to grow your business it is a worthwhile investment.
Attend networking events and talk with fellow self-employed professionals, as learning from their experiences can give you new insights and ideas.
Keep an open mind and remember that you’re not confined to your current situation – you always have the power to change it.
