In a on Mumsnet, the user explained how her friend shaves a significant amount off her hotel bill on a trip to Spain.

"[My] friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her husband and four children, aged between 4 and 16," the poster said.

She clarified that the trip wasn't a package holiday, meaning no meals were included and the flights were booked separately.

The mum-of-four was faced with a dilemma when she realised the maximum number of people per room was two adults and two children.

"The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed," the Mumsnet user explained.

In order to sleep her entire family, the mum would've had to book a second room.

Instead of forking out double the amount of cash, she came up with a sneaky solution.

"She wants to check in with husband, their two youngest boys, and all their luggage," the poster revealed.

She added that her friend intended to have her two oldest boys "wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later."

The Mumsnet user pointed out the potential issue with the hotel hack.

'It's a dark paradise,' inside the hotel that treats you like a star with personal butlers and a button for prosecco

"I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications," she said.

She guessed that the sneaky trick may have "insurance implications" as well as creating a safety concern.

However, the mum-of-four didn't see a problem with her work around.

"[My] friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid," she wrote.

However, Mumsnet users were less optimistic about the hack's success.

Legitimate ways to save cash on a family holiday

Travel and Leisure shared some useful tips to save money while on a family holiday.

Book early or last-minute

While being prepared means you avoid surcharge pricing during busy periods, last-minute deals are often offered by airlines and hotels due to cancellations.

Use your kids to get a discount

Hotels and resorts often offer deals and discounts for children under a certain age to entice families.

Find a place with a kitchen

Opting for a self-catered apartment rather than a hotel room can save your family money eating out for every meal.

Avoid additional baggage fees

Consider renting equipment at your location, such as cots or baby seats as it is often cheaper than paying to check your own on a flight.

"That is so stupid. They WILL be caught and it will either be extra [money] or they’ll be on the street," wrote one reader.

"Never mind losing money for their business, over-occupation is likely to invalidate their insurance."

"I work in a hotel. If someone did this and we had a fire we would only be looking for the people booked into the room," pointed out another person.

"I wouldn't be able to relax in fear of being kicked out of the hotel," said a third commenter.

It's not going to be a comfy holiday with four children that age, there will be some bickering going on in that small space.

"The hotel staff are going to notice two extra people, it impacts on their hotel safety."

"Your friend is an idiot. I used to work in a hotel and we have kicked people out for this," said another person.
