A BEAUTY guru has revealed the mistake you may be making that is hurting more than your wallet.
She debunked how the skincare error won't fast-track your way to great skin, and shared other blunders to avoid.
Nicola Moulton, skincare expert at Beauty Pie, explained why using too much product could damage your skin and your wallet.
Beauty Pie also created a full of stats to "decode and demystify the world of skincare."
The simple tips help others "optimize their routines" and choose the best ingredient combinations for their skin texture.
COSTLY COSMETICS
Moulton first debunked the myth that applying more product to your skin proves to be more effective.

“Although it’s tempting to think you could supercharge results by using more product, this will at best, be a waste of product, and at worst, lead to skin irritation, congestion, and breakouts,” she said.
Moulton also stated that the Beauty Pie research showed that one in three, or 32% to be exact, of regular skincare users also think that the more expensive a skincare product is, the better quality it will be.
This may have been the case a few decades ago, but the expert added that it’s easy to get high-quality and affordable skincare.
She also revealed that almost two in three, or 62% of users admit to applying more products than stated in the recommended guidelines.

The findings also showed that beauty fans use 77% more products than they even need, with moisturizer being the top item that people overused the most.
It was followed by cleansers in second place, eye cream in third, and serums and Vitamin C creams rounding out the top five.
BEAUTY BLUNDERS
SUN SLIP
Moulton called SPF "the best way to protect against sun damage."
Without proper care, sun damage can lead to premature aging, and sunscreen is a "skincare staple" alongside Vitamin C and Retinol.
However, Beauty Pie’s research revealed that only 26% of regular skincare users apply SPF on their faces every day.
And less than half of those people are wearing enough to protect themselves from the sun.
"The recommended amount is half a teaspoon for your face," the expert said.
CLEAN CHAOS
"We’ve come a long way since the only skincare guidance out there was ‘cleanse, tone and moisturize,;" Moultan said.
"It appears some of us are still making some of the oldest mistakes in the book."
According to the expert, one in five don’t wash their makeup off regularly before bed, and that's not all.
"One in three say they sometimes don’t wash their hands before applying skincare products and 14% apply fake tan straight after exfoliating," she added.
EXPIRATION ISSUE
Another common problem is that many don't pay attention to the best buy date on their beauty products.
Skincare products don’t last forever and most will have an expiration date on them.
"Once a product has expired, it could be less effective and could cause adverse skin reactions," Moultan explained.
She revealed that "half of all skincare users say they have no idea when any of their products are due to expire."
CONFUSING COCKTAIL
Another harmful issue when it comes to skincare is a lack of education.
Moultan shared that most people are "confused about ingredient clashes," and unsure about which actives can and can’t be used together.
“There’s an abundance of choice and advice when it comes to skincare," the professional said.
"Whilst this is great in many ways, it can also make it difficult to know which ingredients and products are best for your skin."

The "optimum order" to apply products is cleanser, exfoliator, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and SPF.
But according to the expert, only 18% of regular skincare users were able to identify it.
