Rebecca Elsdon () is an advanced skin specialist and owner of the re/skin clinic in Sheffield, England.

She has gained a loyal following on Instagram, where she shares her knowledge after almost two decades in the industry.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared her tips for reversing the signs of aging on the skin.

BEAUTY BASICS

Elsdon said skincare routines should be personalized to the individual’s skin type and concerns.

However, there are staple products that can benefit people of all ages.

“These essential skincare products form the foundation of a basic routine designed to cleanse, protect, and nourish the skin,” she said.

“It’s important to choose products that are suited to your skin type and concerns and to introduce new products gradually to avoid irritation or sensitivity.

“A gentle facial cleanser is essential for removing dirt, oil, makeup, and impurities from the skin without stripping away its natural moisture.

Budget-friendly ways to cover up dark circles and under-eye wrinkles

“A good moisturizer helps to hydrate and nourish the skin, maintaining its moisture balance and preventing dryness.

“Sunscreen is crucial for protecting the skin from harmful UV rays that can cause premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer.

“An antioxidant serum containing ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, or green tea extract can help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.”

BONUS BUYS

She also revealed two bonus ingredients to include in routines for plump skin and improved elasticity.

“Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A that help stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she said.

It’s important to remember that patience and persistence are key, as improvements to skin health often take time to become visible.

“Start with a low concentration and gradually increase frequency as tolerated.

“Peptides are amino acids that help stimulate collagen production and improve skin firmness, reducing the depth of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Look for moisturizers or serums containing peptides and apply them morning and night as part of your skincare routine.”

The worst viral beauty hacks

Rebecca Elsdon revealed a selection of beauty hacks that should be approached with caution or avoided altogether due to potential risks or lack of scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness:

DIY skincare recipes: "While some DIY skincare recipes using natural ingredients can be safe and effective, others may do more harm than good," she said.

"Mixing ingredients without proper knowledge of their interactions or concentrations can lead to skin irritation, allergic reactions, or even damage.

Using lemon juice or baking soda as exfoliants: "Lemon juice and baking soda are often touted as natural exfoliants, but they can be too harsh for the skin, disrupting its pH balance and causing irritation or increased sensitivity," Elsdon said.

At-home micro-needling: "Micro-needling can stimulate collagen production when performed by a trained professional using sterile tools.

"DIY micro-needling at home carries a risk of infection, scarring, or damage to the skin barrier if not done properly.

"It's important to approach anti-aging trends or hacks critically and prioritize science-backed skincare practices.

"Consult with a skincare professional before trying new treatments or products, especially if you have sensitive skin or specific skin concerns."

SIMPLE SKINCARE

Elsdon said lifestyle factors such as hydration, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise are among the cost-effective ways to slow the aging process.

She also recommends wearing sun protection, managing stress, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

“These lifestyle changes, when adopted consistently, can support skin health and potentially reverse some signs of aging over time,” she said.

“It’s important to remember that patience and persistence are key, as improvements to skin health often take time to become visible.”
