Elbaum said hairstyles can’t entirely prevent hair loss but some can reduce the strain on your scalp, mitigating shedding to some extent.

She shared a selection of the best hairstyles to consider.

“Avoid tight hairstyles like tight ponytails, buns, or braids that pull on the hairline,” she said.

“Instead choose loose styles that don't put too much tension on the hair follicles.

“If you prefer wearing your hair up, opt for low ponytails or buns instead of high ones. This reduces the tension on the scalp.

“Loose braids can distribute the weight of your hair more evenly and minimize pulling on individual strands.

“Soft, loose updos can be gentle on your hair compared to tight, sleek styles.”
