Knowing your colors plays a critical role in room design
ONE design lover has shared her tips for giving your home an eclectic upgrade while still looking put together.

One Reddit user () who works in the environment design space for video games, simply wants her home to feel fun and festive.
"I don't love super matchy-matchy rooms," she said.
"For me, a room should be like a cocktail party. Everyone invited is interesting in their own way, but I want to make sure everyone has at least someone they can talk to or relate with," she added.
"Think of all your furniture pieces and all your stuff as "talking" to each other"."
She explained how playing around with certain color schemes is crucial when decorating a space.
"A hot pink porcelain bowl may not relate to a black metal table - but the rug they are both near is hot pink, black, and white, so they are tied together by this rug," she said.
Expanding your knowledge of the difference between complementary and analogous colors, as well as underlying tones, will give you a decorative and coordinated look.
"Using the same hue in a room but with different shades can help add variation but keep it cohesive," she said.

You'll also want to keep all of your underlying tones the same.
Some other tips for keeping your space more "interesting" and "complex" involve mixing up textures.

To keep your room feeling "cohesive," make sure to have an underlying current throughout.
"Maybe that means having all the same metal color, or all the same wood color," she said.
"Not everything has to be matchy-matchy, but keeping an underlying theme will help a room feel like one vision and not a hodgepodge," she added.
You will also want to choose a focal point in any room and play around with patterns.
"This can mean either repetitive patterns in fabric or repetitive elements in a room - think like a gallery wall of frames or a row of bar stools," she said.
Proportion also plays a part in design.
"Keeping your stuff in scale with everything around it can make or break a space."
She explained how decorating a room all comes down to "how you want to feel."
Her other top tips include making a mood board, planning a basic layout, and taking your time.

- Thrift furniture and paint it to match your decor.
- Test if an item is fit for its purpose before thrifting.
- Shop at Target or HomeGoods for rugs, lamps, desks, and pillows.

- Set up smart home lighting to save money.
