So what better way than taking advantage of natural sunlight?

"Anyone else's mum teach them this?" Danielle wrote over the top of her video.

She then showed herself putting an airer outside in her garden, before putting two pillows on the top.

"Airing your pillows in the sun will help kill dust mites, allergens and any other bacteria or nasties that might be hiding in there," she added in the caption.

"Google says so too!" she added.

And she's not wrong.

SUNSHINE KILLS GERMS

An internet search states that leaving pillows in the sunshine can "deodorise, disinfect and bleach natural fibres";.

It's also a tradition that is popular in Mediterranean countries.

"We now know that ultraviolet rays from the sun can actually kill germs and bacteria, which is part of why airing out your pillows outdoors is such a good idea," Jill Nystal explained in a post on her One Good Thing .

"Another reason to air out your pillows in the sun is that it helps eliminate any moisture that may have been trapped inside.

I perfected my 3-ingredient DIY laundry detergent by making a key swap - now it won't harden the water & it smells great

"Even trace amounts of moisture can attract dust mites and germs, and it can also hinder the fluffiness or loft of your pillow."

Danielle did share a word of warning on her Instagram page though, adding: "Just be careful not to leave them out too long though to avoid any discolouration."

'GREAT TIP'

Followers were quick to jump on board and support Danielle's ingenious hack.

"I didn’t know that! Great tip," one person wrote in the comments section.
