A COUPLE have been warned to think again about a "pretty" name for their baby, due to its secret rude meaning.

Choosing a name for a child can be incredibly hard and daunting, you want something pretty, not too basic, but not too out there, and definitely not something with a hidden inappropriate meaning.

One couple, who live in Canada but are not native English speakers, asked their relatives to help them to choose a name for their baby.

They wanted an English sounding name, but as they are not originally from an English speaking country, asked for help to make sure the name was appropriate.

Taking to Reddit, the woman tasked with helping with the name choice, shared the list of potential baby names.

"I don't know if they're plain weird, or if I'm prejudiced", she said.

Among the list were names such as "luxury", "Serenity", "Chrysanthe", and "Accilia".

However, the name which sparked the most controversy was "Credence".

"This is an actual word. I know it sounds pretty, but aren't names supposed to have a good meaning?", the woman said.

Credence means truthfulness, or believability, which sounds like quite a good thing to name your child after.

However, one Reddit user pointed out that in French, the name has another, much more rude meaning.

They said: "There seems to be no French speakers in this thread so I’ll say it.

I gave my son a unique name - trolls call it 'absolutely ridiculous' & say he'll be bullied for it but I don't care

"Credence means backsplash… especially if you live in Canada, please avoid it".

In French, people refer to the backsplash (the panel at the back of the sink, which prevents, water and grease from ruining your walls) as a credence."

The word backsplash is also used to refer to water from the toilet which splashes onto a person after they have been to the loo.

As Canada has a large French speaking population, it is safe to say that many people will be shocked when they hear the name.

"It means what?

"Gosh, it was such a pretty word", the original poster said.
