I drove 8 hours to co-worker’s wedding but was turned away at the reception – they even seized my invite, I’m mortified
A MORTIFIED guest has told how she drove eight-hours to attend her work colleague's wedding only to be turned away from the reception for failing to read the small print on the invitation.
The woman said she drove herself and another invited co-worker to the ceremony in Scottish Highlands to stay overnight in a B&B near to the remote venue.
After a relaxing evening, the owner of the guest house offered to run the pair to the event in the morning as there were no taxis available.
It was the first wedding she had ever attended in her early 20s she admited as retold the tale.
She posted the details of how the bizarre night unfolded on Reddit to get the community's view on the whole situation.
“The wedding ceremony was so lovely, with Celtic hand tying and a candle ceremony,” she said.
“We take pictures of the bride, mingle with other guests and get on the transport to the reception where the dinner would be.”
But it was when they arrived at the wedding meal did the duo realise something was embarassingly wrong.
She continued: "We get to the venue and like everyone else are checking the table plan for our seats.
"……. And still checking……. But can’t find our names.
"Master of ceremonies comes over and asks to see our invites to which he flatly states we were only invited to the church and evening drinks and that we need to leave.
"It was in tiny small print that our invite wasn’t for the meal."
He took the invite from the woman before asking them to come back later.
The women said they were humiliated, slipping away from the venue as quietly as possible so they wouldn’t be noticed.
They were left to fend for themselves while the rest of the guests enjoyed a three-course meal, opting for a greasy cafe for a roll and a pot of tea before returning to their B&B to freshen up.
That’s when they explained the situation to the B&B owner, who drove them up to the venue.
“The lady was furious and [tried] to feed us up, bless her,” she said. “We actually got told off for not calling her!”
At 7pm the fuming local drove the woman and her colleague back to the wedding venue.
“By this point, everyone at the venue was sloppy drunk as they’d been drinking for five hours,” she added.
That was the moment the woman and her colleague realise they were the only ones not invited to the meal.
“Neither my colleague nor I had realised we weren’t included in the whole event,” she said.
And to exacerbate matters, the bride later “let it slip” that she only invited her work colleagues because her boss told her it would be the “polite” thing to do.
“We had thought we were friends with her,” heartbroken Sarah wrote.
They spent roughly three hours at the evening do before leaving again and having drinks at a local pub.
“We had ended up having a fun night because of the locals.
“They really did save the day in more ways than one.”
