My daughter’s getting married on the date half our family died in a car crash – she insists her reason is valid

Some called the bride-to-be 'heartless'

A MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE is not keen on her daughter's choice of date to get married.

She said it's the day several members of their family died in an accident, but the bride-to-be insists it holds significance for her future wedding in a different way.

Redditor posted the details of the tragedy in a post on the social media platform.

She said that two years ago her mother, brother, and nephew were involved in a car accident.

"My mother died instantly, my brother and nephew passed away the next day," she said.

"My family was small, me, my husband, daughter, parents, brother, wife, and two nephews.

"Their loss was devastating for my life and for everyone, even worse for my father and my sister-in-law."

Her 25-year-old daughter received a marriage proposal one year after the accident and began planning the wedding straight away.

"During this process, they chose the date based on the day they met [seven years ago] and that day is exactly two years since the death of my brother and nephew," the mom said.

She said she tried to talk her daughter out of the painful date, but she stuck to her guns, saying, "all the other available dates aren't so good and wouldn't be so important."

She respected her daughter's decision despite the turmoil it brought to the family.

The daughter sent out the invitations, with many of the refusing to attend.

"As I predicted, my sister-in-law, my [24-year-old] nephew, and my father responded that they would not attend and despite not telling her," she said.

"My father and sister-in-law told me that the date choice was an offense to them."

The daughter called her mother, upset about not receiving an RSVP from the majority of her family.

"I said, ‘Love, this date is difficult even for me, but I will go to your wedding.

"'But you have to understand that this choice of date had this consequence and you would have to deal with the consequences of your choices.’

"She exploded at me, saying that everyone was against her, it's not her fault the dates coincided and everyone could make an effort to go a few hours for her, but they decided to just not go.

"And I was basically saying ‘I told you so.’ She hung up without me answering and we still haven't spoken," she added.

Several Redditors chimed in on the wedding date blunder in the comment section.

"I’m a bit shocked that the daughter has no pain associated with the date. That was her grandmother, uncle, and cousin, and only two years ago. Sort of heartless," one wrote.

"The thing is, no one but her, her husband, and maybe their parents are going to remember their wedding date in five years, but they will never forget the date they lost their loved ones," another added.

A third said, "32 years later I know the date my dad died."

"She literally wants to celebrate her love and marrying the love of her life on the day her family lost the loves of their lives," yet another wrote.

"I don’t understand how she doesn’t see how incredibly painful and insensitive that is and I’m even more shocked she really expected them to show up."

"The bride has a very disturbing absence of feeling, a dark void," one more chimed in.
