I was about to go shopping but a baby slid out of me instead – I was a size 4, on the pill & had no clue I was pregnant
A WOMAN who had no idea she was pregnant has revealed how her baby’s head popped out as she was heading out to the shops.
Coral Hales, 22, from Ramsgate, Kent, felt a sudden pressure between her legs as she was leaving her home and saw her surprise baby’s head.
The mum-of-three was left stunned as she’d been a slim size 4, had no bump, was on the Coil and had been having regular periods.
Despite her dramatic, unexpected entrance, her daughter, Kaleah, now one, was born a healthy girl.
Coral, a NHS nurse, says: “I had absolutely no idea I was pregnant. I was skinny and my tummy was toned.
“But I’m so happy now, as Kaleah really was our miracle. She was the best present ever.”

Surprising pattern
Coral and her partner, Junior Smith, 24, a groundworker, were already parents to two children, Kamari Hales, now 5, and Kamiya Hales, now 3.
Coral says: “Kaleah wasn’t my first surprise pregnancy. Although it had never got that far, or dramatic.
“But, when I was 18 I had the implant in my arm and I found out I was six months pregnant with Kamari.
“The next year I found out I was five months pregnant with Kamiya whilst on the Pill.

“I was certainly thrown into motherhood in the blink of an eye. But they both stole my heart and I loved them more than anything.
“After Kamiya, I knew I didn’t want any more children. Yet all contraceptives were failing me.”
Extra measures
As Coral settled into parenthood, she decided to get a more reliable and long-term contraception, the Mirena Coil.
In 2021, she was busy juggling her two young kids and busy night shifts at A&E.
Coral says: “Between gruelling work shifts, I did weightlifting at the gym. I maintained a flat stomach, wore petite clothing and always looked after my body.
“When I did get time off, I took the kids to theme-parks and rode on rollercoasters.
“And that December, on my 21st birthday, I put on a tight bodycon dress and enjoyed cocktails with my best friends.”
Weeks later, it was officially a week before Christmas and Coral planned to go Christmas shopping with her friend.
A festive shock
Coral says: “The kids had circled what they wanted in a Symth’s catalogue. I wanted to get lots of wrapping paper too.
“The next day, my friend came over, and Junior, my partner, was watching the kids in the living room.
“I told my friend I was going to quickly change, but as I walked into the bedroom, I suddenly felt a huge pressure between my legs.
I laid myself onto the bed and pulled my trousers down, within seconds, I saw the baby’s head sticking out

“I knew the pain immediately. I’d felt it twice before. I realised I was in labour and that my waters had broken.
“I was completely stunned. But I didn’t have time to panic.
“Breathing heavily, I laid myself onto the bed and pulled my trousers down. Within seconds, I saw the baby’s head sticking out.
“I didn’t want to freak out, and potentially cause harm to me and the baby. So I told myself it is what it is, and to just get it done.”
At that moment, Coral’s friend walked in, saw the baby’s head, and frantically called emergency services.
Whilst Junior ran in and helped deliver the baby.
Coral says: “He couldn’t believe his eyes. I told him to catch it so he put his hands between my legs and our baby slid out. I was so relieved.
“Junior handed me our child and it was a little girl. As I held her fingers I knew I loved her already.
“But everything had happened so fast, and it wouldn’t sink in.”
Minutes later, paramedics swarmed the room and rushed Coral and her baby to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Margate.
There, they weighed Kaleah, who was a healthy 6lbs 1oz and she was given a clean bill of health.
Coral says: “I couldn’t stop thinking how this had happened. I had so many flashbacks of the last nine months.
“I thought of all the heavy weights I’d lifted at the gym and all the patients I’d carried onto hospital beds at work.
“I was still so skinny too! Like all my previous pregnancies I was still a size 4 and had been having periods.
“I told the doctor I was on the Coil and they explained it was 99% effective and fewer than 1 in 100 women in the UK got pregnant on it a year.
“But he couldn’t give me any answers. His only guess was that I was the 1% or that it might’ve moved.
“I was shocked but also wasn’t as the same time. Contraception just never worked for me.
“But, unlike the previous times, this had gone right to the very end.”
Soon after, Coral’s partner and kids joined them at the hospital.
A welcome surprise
The next day, Coral uploaded a photo of Kaleah to her Facebook with the caption ‘Welcome to the world, our little Christmas surprise.’
Her friends and family were in disbelief and thought she was pranking them.
After recovering in hospital, Kaleah was taken home in time for Christmas and the family enjoyed the day together in matching outfits.
Coral says: “Thankfully I kept my children’s baby clothes and belongings, so Kaleah had lots of stuff already.
