Mrs Hinch fan shares 55p hack to stop ‘destructive’ squirrels, and you’ve probably already got it in your kitchen
AS a nation of animal lovers, most of us want to encourage wildlife in our gardens but sadly, some critters are more destructive than others.
If you are struggling to stop squirrels from wrecking your garden, there is a surprisingly simple and humane way to deter them – and it cost just 55p.
For those who live close to woodlands, you know how frustrating squirrels can be – especially as they prepare to hibernate.
As well as overturning plants to bury food and chewing through garden furniture, they can become a serious problem with reports of them invading people’s lofts.
However, domestic goddess Mrs Hinch has come to the rescue or rather her Gardening Tips group have.
With over 100,000 members on Facebook, the green fingered folk have been sharing some simple remedies for dealing with squirrels appearing in your garden.
It after one member revealed that they’d been in undated with the wild animals after a well-meaning neighbour began feeding them.
Desperate for a humane deterrent, they asked the group: "How can I get rid of squirrels from my garden? My neighbour is feeding them."
Whilst most of us might resort to expensive and complicated traps, another Facebook user revealed that a simple household ingredient is all they need to stop squirrels.
In fact, they revealed that they stopped them by adding a bit of spice to her plants – literally.

“Cayenne pepper… hot chilli powder, that works for me… they are destructive! As much as I think they are cute, I don't like my plants getting destroyed,” they explained.
Others seemed to eco this, with another suggesting the user add chilli to their bird feeder to stop the squirrels returning for extra helpings.
"Not sure if this helps, but I read the other day to put some chilli flakes in your feeders, it deters the squirrels, but birds are okay,” they wrote, with cinnamon also being a common solution as well.
A third added: "They're lovely and I also love having them but last year they destroyed all my husband's plants. So we had to cover his pots and spread some cinnamon in it. It kept them away from the pots but still came into our garden for nuts."
For those who don’t already have these spices hiding in their cupboards, you can also pick them up at Waitrose for as little as 55p – meaning you have plenty of left over cash come springtime.
If you still find you aren’t able to stop them coming into your garden, an easy way to prevent them destroying your plants is to place food elsewhere for them to munch on.
A handful of chopped nuts should be more than enough to keep them happy over the winter months, especially if you place it far away from your home or precious rose beds.
Some also said they invested in squirrel proof feeders, which activate only once they feel the squirrel’s weight.
