Needing some reassurance, the bride took her dress drama to the online forum Reddit to gather some opinions.

She certainly achieved that but not all of the views were about the dress color.

There were many more questioning her mom's decision in the first place.

In her post, she laid out the thorny issue with pictures of the frock that was causing so much worry.

"My mom wants to wear this to my wedding," she said. "But I'm not sure if it's appropriate color-wise."

But she was concerned she may have been overreacting.

"Am I overthinking this or does this look too close in color and style?" she asked in her post.

Her gown was a glorious, white satin, floor-length number, but the neckline was similar to her mom's.

There was a huge response to her question and hundreds of comments.

Commenters were annoyed on the bride's behalf: Why, they asked, was her mom choosing a dress that was bridal-like?

It was a view summed up by this person: “It’s way too similar to your dress. There’s no shortage of dresses in the world. She can choose something else.”

A second person echoed those feelings: “Too similar to your dress. Not appropriate at all.”

One commenter said to go in hard: “I’d tell her she looks washed out because she does, and because vanity might appeal more to her than empathy.”

Even more confirmation should she need it came from this Redditor.

"That is totally inappropriate. Your mom should be wearing a dress that compliments yours, not competes with it. This looks like another wedding dress," they said.

It should not be allowed, wrote this person: "That is literally a wedding dress. It's not at all appropriate for the mother-of-the-bride to wear an honest-to-goodness wedding gown at her own daughter's wedding."

There were some who commented just on the color: “Forget that. It looks like it is dirty and splattered with paint.”

And there were others who remarked on another similarity.

"I'd tell her you love the shape, but you're worried that the neckline will be too close to yours, and could cause people to talk," they said.

But there were some fans of the matching dress idea, as explained by this person.

"Personally I like mum and bride being cohesive. My friend had her mom in a near-identical lace dress to her own wedding and the photos are gorgeous," they said.

Wedding experts at had some guidance for the bride and mom-of-the-bride outfits and color coordination.

They said: "There's not one specific color the mother of the bride should wear.

"But unless you've received approval from the couple, it's best to steer clear from white, ivory, or champagne hues so as not to take attention away from the bride."
