Is Elf actually a prequel to Step Brothers? New fan theory is blowing people’s minds

A blogger has revealed a potential connection between the two movies and fans can't handle it...

IT may not be showing on TV this year, but Elf is still one of the most loved Christmas films of the last few decades.

Will Ferrel's whimsical portrayal of a human whose brought up as an Elf is a Christmas classic that's loved across the globe, and seeing as it was released 13 years ago in 2003 we thought we knew everything there is to know about the flick.

But now, one fan has come up with a theory that will blow the minds of Elf lovers everywhere; the film might actually be a prequel to Step Brothers.

Explaining on his blog, Trent wrote: "So last night I was doing what I do every December and watching Elf on a loop when I had this thought."

After tweeting this thought out to his followers, it seemed that many of them agreed.

Step Brothers, which was released in 2008, also stars Will Ferrell as Brennan; an aimless middle-aged man living at home with his mother.

But the two films have one thing in common - both feature actress Mary Steenburgen as Ferrel's mother.

Despite the fact that Steenburgen actually plays Buddy's step mum in Elf, Trent notes that she takes more of a liking to her unexpected step-son than his biological father does.

Trent explains:

"Some people responding to my theory tweet said: “Why would Emily get custody of Buddy when Walter is his biological father?” The answer to that is obvious.

"During the divorce hearings Walter likely said Emily could have Buddy cause he didn’t want him in the first place and she clearly did want him. She’s more fit to be his guardian."

So, if this theory were to be true, then that would mean that Buddy's step-mum divorces his dad and then gets custody and moves on.

If so, she changes his name to Brennan (as we know that Buddy is only a nickname given to him because of the nappy brand he was found in by Santa,) and they live together.

Fans also pointed out that the brothers of the two characters also looked uncannily alike.

As if that wasn't proof enough, Trent goes on to point out more similarities between Brennan and Buddy:

"Buddy and Brennan can both sing. One of the strongest pieces of evidence. Both Buddy and Brennan are amazing singers and their pipes are proudly displayed in each movie."

Plus, they both love animals. Trent writes: "It’s mentioned in Step Brothers that Brennan recently worked at PetSmart which means he loved animals enough that he wanted to be around them everyday for his job.

"You know who else loves animals? Buddy the Elf."

And one more clue comes in the fact that neither character wants to grow up.

"Both Buddy and Brennan cannot function as adults. It’s the main issue in both flicks.

"When Buddy’s step mom in Elf asks, 'How long will you be staying with us?' Buddy says 'forever' and he means it.

"Brennan refuses to get a job and refuses to move outta the house because he’s actually Buddy the Elf and wants to live at home forever.

"So there you have it. Elf is the prequel to Step Brothers and you cannot convince me that’s not true."

It's weird, it's wonderful but it might just be a Christmas miracle - could this wacky fan theory be true?
