MANY couples love going out for a swanky meal for date night - but not lovebirds Peter and Anne-Marie.

The US-based engaged couple prefer to spend their romantic evenings “dumpster diving”, and even found abandoned flowers for their wedding in a bin.

Peter and Anne-Marie appeared on and revealed they set aside Thursday nights to hunt in dumpsters for unwanted “treasure.”

On the show, the money-savvy couple could be seen arriving at an alleyway bin and putting on protective full-body suits for their “dive.”

Anne-Marie explained: “Once stuff is in a dumpster or on the curb, it’s free game.

“You want to make sure that all your clothes are disposable clothing, that way you can get anything on them and it won’t matter.”

More on dumpster diving

On the show, their dumpster dive proves successful, with Peter saying: “There’s flowers up here, all different colours and stuff.”

The couple have a whole truck of equipment for the job, including golf clubs with magnets on the end to retrieve discarded coins.

Another golf club has a razor blade attached on the end so they can cut into boxes, and one has a claw.

Anne-Marie added: “Each tool has a flashlight, it frees up our hands.

“We always have a cooler for any perishables we might find.”

The couple realised they had the “same type of mindset” when it came to saving money on their first date.

Anne-Marie explained: “I suggested that we went to the local pizza parlour for our first date and Peter agreed, I think that’s when we both realised we both like to be a little frugal.”

After being engaged for three years, the couple decided to tie the knot at the pizza restaurant, and used the unwanted flowers from the dumpster.

For decoration, the bride and groom put sweets on the table, and Anne-Marie reused her gown from her first wedding.

However, Anne-Marie’s daughter Lesley was not that impressed at the low-key nuptials.

She said: “I don’t know why she’s trying to be cheap with her wedding.

“My mum and Peter are having their wedding at a pizza parlour.

“It’s good pizza, just not that fancy for a wedding.”
