FLOUR FRIEND

People are only just realising Homepride Baking flour logo man has a name

THE HOMEPRIDE mascot has graced our television screens and supermarket shelves for decades - but did you know he has a name?

The little figure, who beams on the front of flour packets, has been synonymous with food brand Homepride since his inception in 1964.

And fans have now realised the man has a name... Fred the Flour Grader.

Homepride is owned by British food manufacturer Premier Foods and is best known for prepared cooking sources and flour.

Many across social media were shocked by the discovery.

One wrote: "Having googled the old Homepride flour man, I had no idea his name was Fred. Nor did I know that he was voiced by John Le Mesurier."

In the mid-sixties, Fred was given the catchphrase "Because graded grains make finer flour" and was voiced by four different voice actors, Le Mesurier being one of them.

Fred was then figuratively shelved in 2004, until a plummet in sales marked his comeback to our screens.

Appearing in a £2.3 million marketing campaign, the monochromatic bowel-hat-wearing figure resurfaced after a decade long layoff to commemorate the brand's 50th anniversary.

Fred's popularity hasn't wavered, it would seem. The mascot also has his own collectables shop online.

A number of Fred-studded merchandise is on offer, with aprons, mixing bowels and kitchen utensils all available.
