I’m an interior design expert – the trendiest storage hack can add $12k in value to your home

THE trendiest way to add extra storage to your home is also a phenomenal way to add value, experts said.

One pro estimates that adding a specific storage space to your home could increase the house's value by $12k – an investment well worth the initial cost.

The estimate comes from Vlatka Lake, a storage expert at . Lake explained that a walk-in closet can add enormous value to your home, and it's a smart way to put unused space to work.

“If your home is starting to feel cluttered and you have the space, creating a walk-in wardrobe is the perfect opportunity for you to whittle down what items you know you’re going to be reaching for day to day," Lake said.

You don't need a large space for his home hack, either. Go in with a plan based on what you hope to store, and take measurements to see what's possible.

“At this stage, you want to think about what it is exactly that you will be storing," Lake said.

"From longer items like coats and dresses to small items such as shoes and accessories you’ll need to evaluate what type of rails you’ll need before you get started," she explained.

A walk-in closet actually offers more customization than smaller rooms or freestanding wardrobes.

When you're planning the layout, consider who will be using the space, as well.

Is it going to function as a clothing closet for you and your spouse? Or will it be used as storage space for the whole family?

That can determine how accessible certain areas should be, and how much of your storage is along the ground or on higher shelves, Lake explained.

Lake said that lighting "is a crucial element in all interior design, and it can quickly transform your space into something bright and clean."

"If your space has windows, adding blinds can help to soften harsh natural lights within your space," she added.

If you're converting a space that doesn't have exposure to natural light, think about how you can implement lamps or mirrors to make the closet brighter.

Strip lighting, statement ceiling lights, or stylish standing lamps can accentuate the space.

Mirrors can function as a design element along with their practical purpose, Lake said.

"The reflective surface amplifies natural light, making the room feel bigger and brighter," she explained. "And the ample option for frames means you can add an exciting element to the room.”

Finish off the space by adding wall art that reflects your personal style, or tasteful accessory stands to highlight any designer items or other "showcase" pieces.

"The overall convenience of a walk-in wardrobe is something that can be enjoyed immediately and for many years to come," Lake said – whether it's appreciated by your family or potential buyers.
