Well, there's no point crying over .

You might notice a dried splatter on your coffee table or accidentally drop your brush on the floor and think: "I'll just use nail polish remover."

Contrary to its name, nail polish remover should not be used to remove nail polish from wooden surfaces.

Instead, experts recommend using rubbing alcohol to remove nail polish stains in your home.

If the stain is fresh, use a cotton swab to soak up the excess polish, making small swipes with the grain.

Once you have removed as much polish as possible with your swab, apply a small amount of alcohol to a clean cloth.

Rub the stain gently, going with the grain, taking care not to damage the wood.

You can use ultra fine steel wool (0000 grade) to buff out the remainder of the stain.

If you do end up damaging the wood while scrubbing it clean, the experts at The Maids recommend sanding out the stained area.

If the stain is on a hardwood floor, you may need to take a different approach when tackling it.

If the stain is still wet, put some sugar on the damaged area and wait for it to congeal and harden.

Brush the dried residue off with a soft brush and, if the stain is still present, use the rubbing alcohol method.

Keep switching out your clean cloth as needed until the stain is lifted.

If the stain on your hardwood floor is dry then you may require something stronger than rubbing alcohol.

The Maids recommends using mineral spirits, after carrying out a spot test first.

If you missed a small splattering of nail polish while cleaning, grab some hairspray and spritz these spots.

Let the hairspray sit for a minute before wiping away with a wet cloth and cleaning with a wooden floor cleaner.

If the stain is significant or worsens throughout the cleaning process, the experts at The Maids recommend contacting a professional to tackle the issue.
